Revlon Ceramic Hair Straightener and Curling Iron - Perfect Heat 2-in-1

RoUtahHairDark BrownNormal HairCurly HairThick or Coarse HairGet What You Pay ForJust for reference, I am a caucasion with brown hair. It's naturally curly/wavy and pretty thick, almost down to my waist. When I got this iron, my hair was just past my shoulders. My hair straightens and curls easily but only because it's relatively healthy. I don't use any products except for Grape Seed Oil as a heat protectant/conditioner. My hair is not colored.
This is the second curling iron I have ever owned. The first one was a similar "cheap" tool that I got at Kmart or Target or something similar. I bought it in 1997 but took it out of the country and fried it on a higher-voltage circuit. Oh well!
Anyways, I bought this in February 1998 because I cut bangs/fringe for the first time and my coarser/curlier hair needed more than just a round brush and dryer. I liked the idea of also having a curling iron to curl my hair if I wanted.
By and large, it has been a good purchase; here it is almost 3 years later and I'm still using it (although I'm awaiting the delivery of its replacement).Quality is the biggest issue with this tool. I've never been able to have bouncy curls or even waves throughout the length of my hair with this; could be the tool or the size of the barrel -- I don't know.
The first thing to break was the black piece where you put your thumb to open the clip. Now it's just the bare metal and if the iron gets too hot, I burn myself on this. I could have siliconed the piece back on but I lost it before I could get to it.
Next thing to go was the clip/latch that holds it together as a curling iron. Not a huge deal; I just hold it closed with my right hand (since I'm holding the handle anyways) but still, it broke within the first year.
Finally, the coating on the iron is essentially totally rubbed off from my hair; it even flakes off INTO my hair -- yuck! I think it was supposed to be a "tourmaline" or ceramic coating but it started to show wear within the first year and now where my hair rubs most of the time is basically just bare metal.
I've never used it to straighten my hair because I knew it wouldn't work; beyond slightly smoothing my bangs, my hair is too think, course, curly, and long for it work. It just doesn't smooth the cuticle like the ones hairdressers use. Instead, I pick big chunks of hair to curl and the ends get a bit of curl to them and the rest gets a little smoother; frizz is still a problem but I'm used to that.
I just ordered a top-of-the-line clipless curler and a 1" flat iron from FOLICA.COM for about $150. I'm really excited to get them even though this is WAY more than I'm comfortable spending but I want to be able to enjoy doing my hair and also know that I'm not frying it. For $15-$20 this Revlon is okay but I should have replaced it long ago.

JillBuyer BewareAfter just a few uses the spring hinge started cracking. Then, the heat adjustment wheel went all the way around beyond 25 because it was no longer tight in the handle. Then the paint started to chip on the barrel and finally plastic casing near the curling iron spring loaded arm broke. I've had this a little over a year and got all the use out of it I could. It's time for a completely new product because I won't be buying this one again!posted Apr 16, 2010Link to this post

JessicaNew JerseyVery Bad!I would not reccommend purchasing this product. I wanted a hair straightener and we were at Wal*Mart and I found this there, it sounded fantastic. A curling iron & straightener. It was never really that good, it would fail to straighten my hair unless it was went over a good 2-4 times on high heat (you have to let it sit on lvl 25 for about 5 mins for this). It always pulled my hair on the little screws which was pretty painful, not to mention how painful the performance of this straightener was. I never used it to curl my hair because it's short and the barrel is quite big. Now the clamps on my straightener have a hard time opening and they're always stuck together, almost like magnets and I have to use my fingertips to pry them apart. I am 15, almost 16 years old and I hope to get a new ceramic straightener before my birthday. Which i'll make sure isn't Revlon.posted Jan 21, 2010Link to this post

JessicaSan Francisco, CaLoosely Put TogetherI bought this curling iron/straightener because the other one I had from conair was no longer production. It is loose and difficult to hold tight enough to straighten and consistently turns itself off. In short it is a total pain.posted Jan 13, 2010Link to this post

AshleyGoldsboro, Nc UsaBroken Hinge After Couple Of UsesI was given this as a gift and not 4 months later the hinge at the end of the thing broke! I looove that it straightens me Puerto Rican/Americn hair but don't like the fact that it broke and then proceeds to burn your finger tips after using the product for a while. It becomes to hot to handle and it's a poor design.posted Dec 24, 2009Link to this post

AlyssaFloridaHorrible Flat IronI received this iron as a birthday gift several years ago. I only used it once or twice before one of the plastic hinges broke. Unfortunately, I never used it as a curling iron, so I can't say how that worked. But I did use it as a flat iron, and from what I remember it didn't work all that well. Worst of all, the clamp for the curling iron would pull my hair really bad! Please don't waste your money on this product.posted Sep 4, 2009Link to this post
