Hair Breakage As Hair Grows Out
I'm an African American woman growing out her short tresses for the past three years. I go to the salon for regular coloring and trimmings but my hairdresser has advised me that my hair needs to be cut short again because of its continuous breakage in the middle of my head. Not to mention I have a really fragile hair line. The problem is that we do not know why its breaking. For three years we have gone back and forth on what it could be. Ie-my hairdresser believes the biggest culprit is my sun hat. My occupation is one that requires me to work outside and with my skin being so extremely sensitive, its a must have to keep from suffering. I regularly treat my hair at home with warm olive oil, deep conditioners, special oils, great sulfur free shampoos and conditioners. I wear a silk scarf beneath my hat so as not to cause friction, and I maintain a healthy diet with a lot of water intake. Also I've been to the doctor to check for thyroid problems, taken blood test and have been administered special vitamins for hair health. I'm even taking a hormone pill called spiroldactone which is suppose to assist in the growth process of the hair.
So I'm confused,,, What am I doing wrong and can this product help me with my breakage! I'm always so nervous and intimidated by my hair dresser because she insist that short hair is my thing. Basically she's one step away from telling me she will not do my hair anymore if I don't let her cut it off. I love short hair, but I also like the versatility long hair can bring.

If anyone see's this and can relate please respond. I would so much like to hear from you! And please by all means let me know if the Keratin product does what is suppose to.

    Thank You,

    Angela

    Split Ends
I have very very bad split ends. I really like the length my hair is right now and don't want to have to cut so much of it off because of my split ends. A lot of products just say they will prevent the split ends; I haven't found one that will repair them yet. So, will it actually repair rather than prevent the split ends?

      Prods For Split Ends
Liz, I'm not sure about this product in particular, but to mend split ends, Ted Gibson recommends Aveda Brilliant Humectant Pomade- rub in hands and apply to hair in sections. If you use a lot of heat on your hair, and that is the reason for your splits, Tabitha from Bravo recommends Joico Split End Mender - work it through damp or dry hair. I've never tried either of these prods before- I was just watching Dr. Oz one day and Tabs and Ted were on with hair solutions. I don't know that anything can literally mend your split ends once they get really bad. It seems to me like the products just keep them from looking raggedy but I'm no expert. I think you should at least cut a half inch to an inch off because once your splits unravel to such a high point on your hair it prevents your hair from being healthy and, at least in my experience, from growing any further. Also deep condition and avoid shampoos and conditioners that simply coat your hair to cause shine (like Pantene) because that will worsen your problem.

Here is what Doc Oz said about splits: hair is made up of shingles and when the cuticles crack, the hair can unravel. At this point, it is too late to turn back and cutting off the split ends is the best solution. But when you don’t want to chop your hair, the products mentioned above can help.

There's no way to "fix" split ends other than to prevent them from getting worse. Split ends happen when the end of your hair shaft actually breaks in half -- even if you could go strand-by-strand gluing the hairs back together, there wouldn't be a point as your hairs are already damaged. So, get a good trim and heat-style less to prevent it from getting worse.
