If you want the color to show well, you should probably try to bleach it first.

    How To Bleach Black Hair?
I have pondered dying parts of my hair blue for quite a while now, and I finally think that this summer I will pick up the courage to do so. :D Im going with the punky blue black and hoping for a striking, bold, bright, but dark-ish blue. This is definitely my first time dying my hair, partly because I basically have jet-black hair and I do a lot to it, namely chlorine from the pool 6 days a week, and am not looking for a brittle, dry look no matter how much I will enjoy the color. It being my first time, I dont mind it fading or being faint or whatever, but I realize that I will need to bleach if I want it to show up AT ALL (right?) I need advice bleaching beforehand...what to use (would the punky bleaching kit work?) and how to avoid that gross bleached-red/pink...HELP!should I go for it?

How To Bleach Your Black Hair
      Hi there!

My first piece of advice would be to do some testing on some non-exposed pieces of hair... Test the bleach to see how your hair reacts to it, and whether it lightens well. To dye it blue, you don't need to have your hair go all the way whitish blonde, especially if it's a darker blue. It's enough to have the hair be a medium blonde, as long as it doesn't go orange. The only drawback is that your blue is more likely to fade to green, but your hair would be less damaged by the bleach. In any case, if you go to the pool regularly, be prepared to have the chlorine alter the color towards green. You might also be sure that your dye isn't still washing out before going to the pool (my own hair leaks blue in the shower for the second and sometimes third wash after it's freshly dyed blue). In any case, it's a good idea to invest in a good bottle of conditioner, as you'll need it to care for your newly colored hair: the conditioner will avoid any further damage to hair that's been made fragile by bleach, and will also lock the blue dye in.

      Good luck, and have fun!

    Mixing Colors?
Have you mixed colors before? I bought violet and think it might be too light or flourescent. I still want to use it though. I have black, Asian hair and want to color the gray and give the remaining black a purple sheen. How about if I mix Blue-Black with the Violet to tone the Violet down?
