this product really works! i had no idea that it would actually remove the black from my hair! i made mistakes of not leaving it in for a longer time, as well as dying it a dark brown which came out black again!!! but other than that it really works!

I am naturally a level 3-but for the past 3years have been a level 9! So I thought I would go a few shades darker to a level 5! What a disaster-my hair was so porous, etc. that it turned black! So I needlessly suffered it for two months very down and out and luckily came across this product. It is a true miracle! I first did a strand test and it was beautiful-blonde again. So on Friday night I did steps 1&2(ditched step #3) and had beautiful light golden blonde again. Next day a little darker but still great, no re-color was necessary. Sunday day 3 a little darker so I did the process again! Awesome results! Now I have a clean slate to have whatever shade of blonde I want again! Thank you girls for your post here-you helped save my hair problem. I put Ion protein reconstructor on after my shampoo out and my hair has never been so soft and light like when I was a child!! The smell was not an issue, smelled like a mild perm, but was gone the next day!!!You will be so thrilled you used this!!!!

I have naturally black (with some gray) hair and have tried unsuccessfuly to dye it a lighter color. A friend recommended I strip my hair before dying it next time so I bought this product. I followed the directions closely, except the final step after reading tons of reviews on-line and speaking with the sales clerk. The hair that had been dyed did indeed turn red. The roots though remained the natural color. Considering the product is intended to remove color, it did what it was expected to do. My biggest complaint is the SMELL. After several days and numerous washes, I still smell the product. It seems that every time my hair gets wet, the smell is reactivated. I have decided to wait a few days before dying it again, in part because I am concerned that the smell is an indicator that the chemicals are still active and may not mix well with new color. I am hopeful that by this time next week, I will have a warm brown / auburn color instead of solid black or the current carrot red with black roots.

i added a star, because i lucked out.. i thought perfect 10 was a semi permanent.. till i read the box. it's permanent... yay! i can make use of my purchase after all. Still nervous about the second step, despite conairpro's insistence. I give them a lot of credit for getting back to me so quickly..

so wish me luck.. i will be be colorfixing soon! no need for bleach for me thank you. (-: still thinking about a few lemon juice highlights before I do my target colour a week or two later... still a bit concerned about how light i should go with the target colour... i know it's easier to start lighter and work back up... wonder if a couple of weeks in between will give the hair a chance to settle down and do some deep conditioning before i try colouring again, so it doesn't turn too dark again. How many steps lighter should you colour to get your target colour? And at what point?

Reviewer: Jennifer from Canada  Fri Nov 14 2008

I only rated this a three because I have colorfix on order and haven't had a chance to use it. After reading many reviews I decided to find the source and ask a few questions. Within a second i recevied an email asking for my number, and then almost another second later a call. I was told the second step which is only about a 3 percent solution of hydrogen peroxide which they claim will not harm hair is important. I had wondered if letting the hair oxidize naturally might be a healthier way to find out how much dye was left in. Unfortunately I also also told it was not for use on semi permanent colours. I had started using light ash brown perfect 10 (which i was happy with) and then curiosity got the better of me and experimented with the medium brown by perfect 10 which turned out to be much darker, too dark for my skin tone... the highlights had been played up in the picture on the box. I've unsuccessfully tried to lighten with the light ash when it came time to touch up roots... and there is something of a tone tone effect, although at first the colours were close enough it had something of a touch by an angel lighting effect on the top of my head...

rather than wait a year for things to grow out or cut my hair much shorter than I'd like (it's about medium length and naturally close in tone to the colour I first used... i was just trying to cover a few grays and add a little sparkle)I thought I'd give colorfix a try.

Conairpro insists this is not for semi permanents and that my hairdresser was right to suggest lemon juice which i hear works well for lightening with egg or olive oil, (or even a little bleach which I can't bring myself to do... as I have patch of excema on my scalp because of our dry climate. This wasn't a problem when I coloured as I used a little vaseline and never had a problem with burning.)

Was a little concerned as i had read in one place never to use lemon juice on dye.. but maybe it's safer for semipermanent...

Despite all this and because i've already spent the money and only need to lighten a shade or two to be able to use my target colour.. i'm still tempted to use the colorfix. The colourfix will stay good in it's box for three years conair tells me, so perhaps I'll save if just in case... maybe my sister will need it within that time if I don't.

I was told that this is intended as a professional product which is why there may be some confusion among the general public about how it should best be used.

Should i take the risk? Maybe i will if lemon juice has no affect... it will either work a little or not at all, so at this point perhaps i have nothing to lose by trying a little bit with shampoo... I don't think it can hurt even if it has no effect.. i did notice some people had used it on semi permanent, but may be because there is a mix of products and some permanent in their hair as well. Maybe I will have more luck with lemon juice and dish detergent... the thought of bleach scares me though... i run from smoke and switched mediums in my work as a painter to avoid toxic solvent in my body... perhaps the blue bleach? but no, I can't bring myself to try it.

Best of luck everyone... and hope this answers a few questions for the curious, as other people's reviews helped to answer mine.

I have been dying my hair for about 20+ years blond. I am naturally light brown. I have gone to salons, but they could never get the color I wanted. So I decide to do it myself, but after 8 months to a year the color starts to build up and gets real brassy. I use this product to completely strip the color out and start fresh. After the product I put in a color a little lighter than I normally do. It comes out great. My hair actually feels healthier after. I highly recommend this product. I also like the idea that you don't have the use the whole product.
After applying one n' only my hair does come out with a orange tint. I just reverse by using a color mixture with gold base and a few drops of the color nearest to mind in the voliet base. It evens it out.
Best product ever!

I dyed my hair black about 5 days ago and thought I'd get used to it but it makes me look like the Lily Munster. I tried to dye it a lighter color in hopes that it would cover the black.. but nooothing covers black. So I read all the reviews for this product and Color Oops and found that Color Oops didnt work well for people with black hair. After reading the reviews on skipping the third lotion step, I was going to do that, but the box made it seem like my color was going to come back if I didn't use it so I did. Before it was an orange color which kind of freaked me out so I used the lotion and it made most of the black come back with some dark brown color (the color i had in previously) mixed in. But I didn't get the lotion very well in the back and it took my hair back to it's natural brassy brown color so I'd definately skip the lotion step. I still have some mix left over so I'll apply again in a few days. But for everyone who says this will dry out your hair and damage it.. I've colored my hair twice, used Colorfix.. and dyed it again and it's as heathly as the days when I didn't dye my hair. And I'm going to use colorfix and dye it again if it's uneven again, so I'll let you know if it falls out. Colorfix is amaaaaazing and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to take out any color in their hair

Product Rating: 5 Saved my hair - and my wedding!

After years of overprocessing and hair dying, I decided to try to dye my hair back to it's normal colour (medium brown) one last time. Big mistake! L'Oreal's "Double Espresso" came out blue-black. I phoned several hair salons and they told me that the only way to fix my hair was to bleach it and then start over. I have baby fine hair and there is NO WAY that I could have bleached it, especially with my wedding coming up next summer. I was pretty hesitant to try this product because I figured, if it's so great, then why don't hair salons use it? I decided to give it a try anyway and am I ever glad I did! I am so grateful for this product; my hair is back to it's natural colour (a brownish-auburn) and it is healthier than it's ever been in years! I don't need to worry now about having light roots and black hair in my wedding photos.

I used the entire product, following the exact instructions. When I rinsed it out, my hair was a bright orange colour but the toner brought it back to my natural colour. I think the toner (step #3 is really important to achieve your natural shade).

This is a wonderful product and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has dyed their hair too dark. The smell isn't as bad as I thought it would be either.

Product Rating: 5 Worked exactly how I thought
Reviewer: Mary from California  Sun Aug 03 2008

I needed a color remover to remove my medium brown shade of hair dye as I was trying to go blonde. Colorfix worked exactly how I was hoping it would- removed all the brown, and left me with a good base color of a very light orange to start with. I was able to move on to bleach and bleach my hair with less steps to get to the light yellow I needed. I wish I had known about this a year ago when I first tried to go from a dark brown to blonde.
The product is very stinky, but the smell will go away once you wash your hair a couple times. I didn't end up with my natural color, but it removed the color I didn't want, all without noticable damage.

Product Rating: 4 definitely better than color oops!!!!
Reviewer: bazet   Sat Jul 26 2008

I have brown hair, which turns kind of light brown in the summer, but I prefer darker hair when I'm tan. So I bought a box of dark brown hair dye, and turned my hair absolutely JET BLACKKKK. no brown whatsoever. My hair was darker than my black dress pants! I thought I could live with it, but couldn't. The day after I dyed it I tried Prell shampoo. It definitely worked a little, but only lightened up certain spots. A week after I dyed it, I bought 2 boxes of color oops. All this did was make me look like a leopard!!! My hair was literally spotted black and brown. It was awful. So another week later I went out and bought colorfix, it evened up hair for sure. Kinddd of turned it a little red, but I can only notice in pictures. I decided to use another half a box and worked better. My picture is the end result. It's close to my otiginal color, and anything is better than the the jet black it was!!!

i had been dying my hair for about 2 years intensively and on and off before that from being 13. i had been using a deep brown and then decided to go for black, which turned out to be a disaster, i dyed it black 3 times before i decided to remove it. i used half the bottles, doing it 2 times and it all came out, but i think i needed to do it another 2 times to get it to my natural shade. it will never give you your natural colour back, it goes an orange auburn colour. so i decided to put a pre lightener on it to take it to a nutral shade, whcih worked and then i dyed it a light golden brown. this product really does work, just be careful.

Product Rating: 4 Do your research

This product works for some. I've been doing hair for over ten years and have been working with this product for over three. If you plan on using this and don't know much about how the dye that you put into your hair will have affected the base color, DO YOUR RESEARCH!

A lot of people are complaining about orange or brassy results. This is because hair dye doesn't leave your natural color underneath. Without getting too technical most dyes on the market work into your hair and change the color of the natural strand: if you use this product it will more than likely be coppery or brassy, sometimes red or orange (especially if you used black or dark brown dye). This is essentially a hair stripper. This means it strips the color to leave you with a fresh canvas for NEW COLOR. Be prepared to color your hair to your "natural" or new shade because, like some of the reviewers below, you may not get what you expect.

That said, I've had wonderful results with everyone I've used this on except for myself. I'm asian and dye my hair black (my natural color is brown). I wanted to strip the black out and give myself the freedom to lighten my hair but multiple uses of this product brought me back to dark brown. Fine. But the pigment became darker and darker until two days later, I was back where I started. This is the only bad experience I've had with this product.

I have to say that I was VERY skeptical about this at first but now that I've tried it, I'm convinced that this is a GOD SEND. I have ethnic hair. It's naturally dark brown- short, frizzy, thick and very curly. I've been dying my hair for the past 3 years. I started out dying it red and when I got tired of that, I dyed it black to get as close to my natural hair colour as I could. I was told that the only way to get the red out of my hair was to dye it black or with a darker colour. THEY WERE WRONG!! This stuff is GREAT!! It got all of the black and red hues in my hair completely out. It didn't damage my hair, and it's now completely even (and ready for another hair dying session). I would definately recommend this product to anyone who wants to remove hair dye, especially jet black hair dye. It worked for me!!!

i had dyed my hair a dark brown, that turned out black, but eventually faded into the color on the box, which was still to dark for me. its been a couple months, and i've tried almost everything! i washed with prell shampoo, etc etc. i looked up ways to get it out, and found several different hair color removal kits. i chose this one, and it worked AWESOME! i was skeptical on if it was going to work or not, and i'd have to just wait and grow it out. but no, 20 minutes later i was back to the color i wanted! it worked after months of having the dye in, and trying to redye my hair! i recommend this for anybody with dark hair! or any color hair even!

Reviewer: Crystal from Texas  Mon May 19 2008

I dyed my hair black a month ago and it started to fade. Instead of dying it black again I wanted to go back to my original color (or something close). I read EVERY SINGLE REVIEW written about this product and chose to use it. I applied the product, followed directions exactly, and skipped step 3. My results? HAHAHAHA! If I remeber correctly my hair has never resembled that of Ronald McDonald until after I used this product. My hair frizzed, was severely damaged and turned bright red/orange. I thought that if I died it medium ash blonde it would turn a medium brown. Once again I was wrong and after following the exact directions on the box of the dye my hair turned pitch black. My hair was blacker than when I originally started so now I have fried fuzzy black hair and am facing having to cut off an entire years worth of hair growth over this mistake. DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AS ME! DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT- I DO NOT CARE WHAT PEOPLE TELL YOU! YOU WILL END UP WITH BRIGHT ORANGE OR TOMATOE RED HAIR THAT IS FRIZZY WITH UNEVEN TONES. Please consider my advice and proceed with caution. Best of luck.

Ive been goin to the salon and dying my hair red with blonde streaks for months now and i loved it. but i got tired of paying 80 to 95 dollars each time. so i decided to try and go back to my natural color which is dirty blonde. and after reading like 200 reviews about this product i decided to buy it. but like it ruined my hair i would have rather kept spending 95 dollars to get it done . it feels the same it just didnt get all the color out. my hair is orange with bleach blonde streaks. now i have to go to the salon neways and see if they can help. this product sucks.

Reviewer: Mrs. Pratt   Thu May 08 2008

I just recently highlighted my hair that was already highlighted, lowlighted, middlelighted and every kind of lighted in between. The results were no highlights anywhere expect ont he very top of my head all the way to my scalp that were as yellow as mustard. I struggled with the bright do for no longer than a day before I decided to do something about it. I called all professional places which were open on this Sunday and most didn't do coloring on Sundays. The ones that did were booked until later that week. Being a teacher at a private school, I needed to do a very quick and workable fix before Monday. I found One n' Only through a Google search on color correction and read every single review. I saw plenty of rave reviews for hair correction from dark to light, but nothing to get rid of bright blonde highlights going to darker ash blonde. I didn't care at that point, I figured I'd call in sick anyway on Monday, so I bit th bullet and purchased a box. I also bought a shade as close to my natural color as I could remember. I mixed the entire bottles of Step 1 or 2 together (because my hair was layered and about 2 inches past my shoulders). I used every drop of the mixture. I just put on my rubber cleaning gloves and mixed the solution into my hair with my hands making sure I saturated my hair like I was shampooing. I slipped a plastic bag over my hair and used the hair dryer on low heat every 5 minutes keeping the bag warm. I watched my hair get to an bright orange hue. I rinsed, shampooed, dried and slapped on the ash blonde. I did a strand test after 5 mins. and it was perfect! Everything is happy again in teacher land and I went onto work on a very happy Monday!

I had dyed my hair a bright fake red; don't ask me why...I hated it the next morning. I am dishwater blonde to begin with and was trying to cover gray before a vacation. I used colorfix for only 10 minutes, and I became a nice shade of blonde on top with some nice strawberry blonde left on the ends. I love it!!! This product is amazing.

Long story short, I died my hair Bigen perminant Dark Brown, which turn out Jet Black, used this 2oz of 1, and 2oz of 2 and 2 1/2 oz of Herbal Essance Moisturizing Shampoo, and I used 3, which made my roots natural color instead of the brassy color people are getting from not using. My hair is now a beautiful Mahogony Brown. You have to try this...
