I have been coloring my roots for 18 years. I have natural dark brown hair that is long and greying. Years of using Dark Brown Natural Instincts turned my hair stubborn black. I switched to dark brown Bigen. My hair was still black. I have a pigment disorder called vitiligo, and as I am aging and getting more grey and have white skin, I looked like a dead witch. I went to a high end salon that gave me a bleach wash that bleached out my new roots and left the rest of my hair stone black again. I then tried a harsh color remover that damaged my hair. I waited a few weeks and tried Ion color remover that lightened my hair to a nice reddish brown but turned it dark again after a couple of weeks. Now I used Colorfix, twice. My hair is a nice copper brown, but I still have areas in the middle section of my hair that are still very dark. I don't want to try to bleach it as it may give me a lot of damage. I will continue to keep trying colorfix because it causes the leaast amount of damage to my hair. My hair is bouncing back healthy, so I am satisfied. I have to use intense conditioners left on the hair and protein fillers to restore the health of my hair. This is the best I can hope for, as nothing takes the place of real natural hair color. I am coloring my roots with burgundy and it looks nice.
I hope this keeps working.

I previously spent $300.00 trying to get black dye out of my hair at a salon only to leave it a disgusting brown color and had to cut hair from damaged caused by stripping. I followed the directions and IT WORKED!!!!

Reviewer: Laura from philly, pa  Mon Jun 01 2009

I've been dying my hair black and/or very dark brown for over a year and a half now. I finally got tired of having darker ends then roots when I wanted to dye my hair even slightly lighter brown. I used this and it removed all the black!! My hair isn't my natural color but it will be much easier to dye it the color I want now. I conditioned my hair very well when I was finished and my hair appears to be in just as good of condition as it was before. As for the smell, its not all that pleasant, but I will deal with it since now nobody can call me a goth anymore! good luck!

Product Rating: 4 Used on African American Natural Textured Hair
Reviewer: LSA from Dallas, TX  Sun May 31 2009

I'm going to make this really detailed bc I didn't see any reviews for African American hair that is natural.

My natural haircolor is a soft black (a #2 for those of you that wear weave...LOL) and i dyed my hair to a jet black with Waterworks brand and about six mos later dyed it blue black L'Oreal Preference in Onyx Sheen. Two mos later (now) the Loreal color completely washed away and I was left with soft black at the roots of my hair and jet black on the bottom half of my hair. Plus, it's summer and I want to go lighter (think Chili from TLC).

I did a strand test and it seemed to take out all the color with the first method so I went for it. I'm pretty happy with the result. I did two applications just to make sure I had all the color out because I dyed black over a my naturally black hair. My hair is naturally a soft black and natural textured (I'm about a 3b/3c) thick and long. But, I was able to do two applications with one kit.

The color I was left with was a dark chocolate brown. YES, it did lighten my roots to a dark reddish brown. But that's fine with me since I'm going lighter. Had I just wanted an even color, I wouldn't have been happy with the lightness around the hairline and temples. My hair was dry, but I think it was more from the shampoo than the product because I used C-System clean clarifying shampoo to wash.

Yes, this stuff stinks, it stunk up my whole apt with just a strand test...LOL but it's worth it to get the black out without bleaching your hair.

So I have spent a lot of time in the bathroom with my roommate dying our hair crazy unnatural colors, until I decided I wanted to go a little more natural. At the point I bought the color remover my hair was pink (dyed w/ punky colors, which i do not suggest if you ever want them out). I completely followed the directions on the box and did not use the lotion because of the reviews. YA MY HAIR IS NOW BLUE!!! Which is strange seeing as blue was NOT one of the many colors ive dyed my hair. Does anyone know how this could have possibly happened?

ive been coloring my hair black for about 6 years now. I asked my hair dresser about stripping my hair and she didnt want to go there so instaid i tried slowly bleaching it( partial highlights). but even the bleach wouldnt get through the black especially the bottoms. so i would get it bleached every month and let it grow but i'm not that patient. i wanted my hair light brown again. I used this product and it took out all the black! I'm totally shocked! i mean it smells like a perm but my hair is now a light brown! I would recommend this to anyone with black hair who wants to get rid of it!

so i used color fix to get rid of the faded pink streaks in my hair. i did the all over directions so i could lighten my hair for the color i was going to use after (should mention writing this while the processing stuff is in my hair). it lightened my hair to a kinda brassy color and the fuscia is still there in parts but it is way toned down and i'm confident when i put the final color on (colorsilk golden brown) it will be totally unnoticable.

This stuff is awesome it does work. I too read all reviews before trying this stuff.
I put half 1 and 2 left it in for 12 minutes and my hair became so light, copper/little orange, but could still deal with it. I decided to use the processing lotion to tone up, and it did, your hair because dark again, but not like it used to be really dark. IN pictures my hair looks medium reddish brown, from dark reddish brown.
So I am going to lighten it again, but this time leave the 1&2 for 5 to 6 minutes instead of the 12 i did before minutes and not use the processing lotion.

If you leave it on longer then 10 to 20 it will take orange as hell, that is why you have to monitor your hair and see if it's getting to orangy for your liking

I recommend this to anyone who needs to get rid of there dark hair. I would show you pictures but was not wearing any make up... so don't look pretty. lol

OK,,so I read all your reviews and left it on longer, didn't use Step 3, etc. Well, it took out some of the black but my hair is still really dark. What is my natural hair color? Who knows now but way back when it was light brown with blonde highlights after the sun. So, as I sit here with my protein treatment on my hair, Im contemplating my options........

Product Rating: 2 Should've gone to a salon
Reviewer: Woman from Washington   Tue Mar 10 2009

So, I read the reviews and I was really excited to remove the brownblack hair dye from my hair. I've been coloring my hair for 20 years. My hair is naturally medium brown with red highlights, but because I began to get grey hair when I was only 13, I began coloring it. It was red for several years, then I went brown without the red, then I had my hair highlighted with blonde, which looked great until it began to grow out. That's when I went dark brown. I couldn't afford to go to the salon to keep it up, and my grey hair was coming in again. I colored it with the dark brown, but the blonde wouldn't take. So I did it again, but then the rest of my hair became darker while the blonde became a lighter brown. So I had muli-colored brown hair with some blackish areas. That's why I bought Color Fix. I wanted my hair to be a light, summery brown without the multiple shades. I used the product, and the first several inches of my hair became very light, but the last several inches were still too dark. So I reapplied Color Fix to the dark areas, left it on for 20 more minutes, and rinsed. The dark hair was still dark, but with more red. It was kinda pretty, and it was lighter than before, but the first several inches near my head was too light, so I had to color that. I read the reviews about how new color will take very quickly after using this product, so I added the light brown to the strawberry blonde hair near my head, quickly massaged it in, then blended it into the lengths of my hair, and quickly rinsed. It took maybe 7 minutes. My hair looks exactly the same as before I began....DARK! I should've bought bleach instead because then I'd would've had ALL yellow hair instead of half yellow and half brown. It's hard to have a natural, uniform color if you begin with half light, half dark hair. Oh well, live and learn, right? The first several inches of hair is the color I wanted...light brown. But the rest of it is darker. I'll have to wait a few weeks before I bleach out my hair, but atleast I know my hair will look nice afterward.

I dyed my hair black last summer because I wanted a change and I haven't dyed it for quite some time and my roots look awful. So I read the reviews on this product and thought I would give it a try. The smell over powered the entire house. The product did seem to work the first time, but as the box said you could repeat and I did. Now my hair is three different colors and my head smells like rotten eggs. Now I get to go spend $150 to get the color striped and redyed back to my natural color. YAY.....NOT!!!!

the smell remained in hair after many washes
took my dark brown dyed hair to a copper color after 6 applications.
Did not take it back to its natural color
Was not ready for re-coloring straight away
My hair re-darkened 2 of the 6 times after using it
Doesn't come with applicator bottle or gloves, you need your own mixing bowl and applicator brush.

Product Rating: 5 Use lotion and works FABULOUS!! No more jet black hair.
Reviewer: Very Happy Customer from Canada  Wed Mar 04 2009

Like most women, I have been messing with my hair colour for years. The latest and most drastic colour I tried was Jet Black. It was a beautiful colour. Warning: it gets tired and old fast. I went from being a natural blond to redhead, to brunette, to mahogany brown, to jet black.

After two months, it felt like the worst mistake ever. The salon wanted $120 to attempt to get it out, using bleach and multiple treatments. The hairdresser said black dye doesn't come out of hair.

I should mention I had maybe 5 layers of colour in my hair including a few semi permanent wash out colours, red hair dye, dark brown mahogany hair dye, then red, then black. It all came out.

Color Fix is AMAZING. For shoulder length hair, I used the full amount of the two bottles mixed together, put it on my hair for 20 minutes, and today I have a beautiful honey auburn strawberry blond colour that isn't brassy or orange. The transformation is ASTONISHING!

Tips:

1. The product is made by Jherri Redding, which is owned by Conair Pro in the US. For questions, call their professional stylist hotline at 1-800-726-4202.

2. Follow the instructions and do not skip the third step of the lotion/toner. As the wonderful hotline lady explained, the toner is the only way to know all the colour is removed from your hair, and you MUST use it to stabilize your hair. Otherwise, the next time you color, your hair could turn green and be unpredictable. If you do not use the toner, your hair within 48 hours may go right back to the original dark colour.

**Use the toner. Use the toner. Use the toner!!!!!!!**

3. If the toner darkens your hair, that helps you. It tells you to reapply the colour fix and take out more of the colour because there's still deposit on your hair. DO IT!

4. Use the lotion/toner. I read these reviews, and was scared to do it, too. But the lady at the company explained why it was so important, and I am so glad I did it.

5. The WORST thing that can happen with Colour Fix, as the hotline lady explains, is that it doesn't work, and you're out $15. However, if you spend $15 and it works, you've saved yourself $120 spent at a salon. The worst outcome of using this product is that your hair color doesn't change. (and that's based on the type of dye in your hair). It did not dry out my hair, cause breakage, or hurt it in any way. My hair is silky smooth.

Other tips:

Use a plastic grocery bag on your head if you don't have a cap. Use a yogurt or sour cream container to mix the stuff and put it on your head. Colour Fix takes old hair dye out of carpet!!!!!!!!!! (I had some old red drops from a previous colour, it took it out. Apply it to the carpet, let it sit 20 minutes, then rinse and suck it out with the steam cleaner or a cloth. WOW!!!!)

After using step 1 and 2, Wash your hair with shampoo TWICE or three times, and use a CLARIFYING SHAMPOO!!! I used Paul Mitchell. VERY IMPORTANT. This takes the smell out. Rinse it for at least 10 minutes. You cannot rinse it too much. Rinsing washes away the hair colour deposit in your hair.

Also, TOWEL BLOT AND DRY your hair very very well before putting the third step lotion on. Rinse, Rinse, Rinse, Rinse.

After the lotion, rinse, and then apply conditioner. Like Dove intense damage conditioner or Pantene extra fortifying conditioner (Both excellent brands that really work).

If you dye your hair after this, wait at least 48 hours. And be sure you pick a "Neutral" colour if you have any red in your hair, and pick a colour at least 2 to 3 LEVELS lighter than your target hair colour.

THIS PRODUCT ROCKS!!!!

I have used color fix a number of times over the past few years. It has always worked to get the color out, but I have always had to re-dye after. Many times the red undertones would return within a few days after the re-dye job, but it still left my hair way better than the previous dye job. I had never used the processing lotion b/c of all the other reviews that said not to. The other day I decided to put the processing lotion on a part of my hair after using the color fix. I wanted to see if that area took the dye differently. Yes!! It was a more true color tone and did not turn red like it did before when I did not use the processing lotion. Yes, it did darken my hair a bit when I first put it on (I am a med/light blonde), but it is such a more real color with highlights. The times that I have not used the lotion it seemed like my hair got a funky tone in areas. Anyway, I think the lotion keeps the hair more stable for re-dying and makes it last longer. This does work!

I have been coloring my hair for years at home. I have naturally mousy, light brown hair and have been coloring it medium brown (I use Loreal Natural Match 6N-5N). I also used a cap recently to put in a few highlights around my face, which made my hair a little dry, but using a strong conditioner, it feels fine. The color seemed to fade rather quickly so i decided to go a shade darker for a change. I grabbed a box of 3N by accident, instead of a 4N and didn't notice until it was already processing on my head! Came out black! So now I'm freaking out, because I made this mistake years ago and had to bleach it out, which left my hair a mess! At this point I'm thinking that I'll just wait it out, hoping it fades. Then I saw reviews on this website and I couldn't wait to go to the nearest Sally's to pick up a box of Colorfix ($13.99). I was nervous at first to use it because I have somewhat fine hair that has been processed over and over and I didn't want straw-like or over processed hair. I was amazed at how well this stuff works, and how little it affects the condition of hair. This is what I did:

1. Please note that the product package only contains the solution so I bought gloves, mixing bottle, protein filler(optional), and Colorfix.

2. Separated hair into 6 sections so it would cover evenly.

3. Mixed the 1/2 Color reducer and 1/2 catalyst (did not use the processing lotion - just threw it away). The mixture does small a bit like perm solution, but I opened a window and it really is a small trade off considering the results. My hair had a scent for about a day, but not strong enough for anyone to notice the next day at work).

4. I worked quickly putting the solution on my "mini ponytails". I did not put it on my roots yet. The middle and ends were darker as they are more dry and porous. I left it on for about 10 minutes.

5. Then I took out the hair elastics and put the solution on my roots and covered my head with plastic wrap.

6. I put the hair dryer on low heat for about 10 minutes and I could see the black in my hair beginning to change to a medium orange brown, then a light orange. I wasn't too freaked out because so many reviews said this would happen and I never expected to get back to my natural color. i just wanted a clean slate in order to recolor to a medium brown.

7. Once all the color lifted I rinsed and shampooed twice and conditioned for about 10 minutes. I then rinsed and put in a protein filler so that when I re-color, the porous ends won't soak up so much color. I let my hair dry. My hair was a little dry, but no more than when I color it. Definitely does not feel brittle and straw-like like bleaching.

8. *****This is the part that I cannot stress enough!! If you are going to re-color...buy 2-3 shades lighter than the color you want!! I bought a level 6N (light brown - the shade I wanted to be)and my hair turned almost as dark as it was before I put in Colorfix!!! And all of the previously highlighted, drier chunks of hair took the color in seriouly 5 minutes, turning pitch black!

9. So now I'm freaking out again. Some of the reviews in here did mention this, but I can't stress it enough!! I let my hair calm down for two days, conditioning like crazy.

10. I repeated the Colorfix again, which brought my hair to that funny light orange. I now bought a level 8C (ash blonde). I bought the cooler shade to counteract with the orange shade I new I would get after Colorfix. It seemed ridiculous that I had a blonde color knowing that I was trying to reach a medium brown! But...it is much easier going darker if this was going to come out too light.

11. I decided to have a strategy this time with the color to ensure I had even results. I separated my hair into 6 sections. I remembered to put the color on really fast because the color grabs within minutes. I started with the roots in the back of my head and worked my way up to the top. However, I did not put any color yet where my hair was the driest from highlighting (which was on the crown of my head and sides of my face). Then I put the color through the rest of my hair, starting in the back where the hair is the healthiest (takes longer to grab), working my way up again to the top. Then at the last second, I pulled the color through the pieces I hadn't touched.

12. I did this in 5 minutes. By minute 6, I had to rinse the color because it was already darkening. My hair came out great...very even. I conditioned and now my hair is a pretty medium brown. (***but please remember that a BLONDE color was used and it still came out much darker (2-3 levels) than the box.)

I would recommend anyone who colors their hair or anyone who likes to experiment with color to always have a box of this product on hand...it really is a life (and hair) saver!!

Colorfix is not meant to take you back to your natural color. It's a color correcting product, which means you HAVE to redye. Those with that reviewed and said it that Colorfix brought them back to their natural color were lucky and rare--this product isn't meant to do that. Also, to the reviewer for June 8, 2008, Colorfix states it may not work on semi-permanent dyes. This may be why you had problems.

I recently used colorfix to get rid of the permanent black dye in my hair that has been in my hair for a very long time and that I have redyed black many times. I had to do the procedure twice to remove enough color so that in a few days I can recolor. It did not bring me back to my natural color, but I dind't expect it to. Nowhere on the box did it state it would do this. It did turn my hair an auburn color, which oddly, everyone loves except me. I have dark brown eyebrows and auburn hair--just no. It did remove the black as I wanted. It also didn't damage my hair in any way whatsoever. It's actually extremely soft. My hair didn't tangle and I didn't lose any hair. Also, this did nt bother my scalp at all.

I have not redyed my hair yet. I'm waiting a few days before doing that. My hair has not changed (darker or lighter) since the intial color change. I just want to be sure before applying a new color.

I'm giving it 4 stars because the smell is *horrible* and it doesn't come out after multiple washing. I was running on the treadmill today and my sweat amplified the smell of the Colorfix, my basement smelled like rotten eggs. It's truly a horrible smell. Also, even when I can't smell it my cat can. He's constantly in my hair. Makes me wonder if anyone else can smell it. It's gross.

I did not use the processing lotion.

Product Rating: 4 It actually works.
Reviewer: SLK from Lancashire, UK.  Mon Jan 05 2009

So I'm one of those very skeptical people. For five years I've been home-dying my hair, usually really dark red and brown colours. I began getting very bored of it recently, and was sick of my naturally dark ash blonde roots showing every four weeks. I went to the hairdressers to see about having highlights and gradually going lighter, but because there was so much colour build-up she advised against it, as I'd likely get very brassy results.

A bit disheartened, I came home and was determined to find a way to lighten my hair without murdering it with bleach. After doing some research, I came across Color Oops, and Colorfix. Reading the reviews here pushed me towards Colorfix, and so I ordered two boxes just to be safe.

After paying £30 for shipping *cough*, it arrived, but because I was doubtful it sat in the box for weeks. I went out and bought everything I'd need, including a tinting brush, mixing dish and lots of pairs of gloves, plus some dye in Medium Ash Blonde and some neutral shampoo.

Finally got around to it today. Still early days yet, but so far I'm chuffed with the result. First time around I didn't mix enough to saturate my hair (I did the full correction method), so after 20 minutes I rinsed it off, and was amazed when even that started producing results. I doubled the mixture second time round, and left it on for 45 minutes.

I couldn't believe I had light hair again after I rinsed it off the second time. I shampoo'd thoroghly twice and towel-dried my hair. It was very, very brassy, not too orange, so I then applied a protein filler for 20 mins, and followed with the ash dye.

Initially I thought the dye had darkened my hair right back, even though I'd only left it on for 6 minutes, but when I dried it on a low heat setting, I was amazed to see a medium auburn colour. Not as light as I'd hoped, but it's a gorgeous colour, really lovely, and unless it starts darkening (which I'm expecting, if I'm honest) I won't be touching it again. It also feels in great condition, I used an intensive conditioner after dying it and it feels really silky.

I'm really impressed, I thought I was stuck with almost-black hair forever. It's taken nearly all the red out, meaning if I desire I can now get highlights without them turning vivid orange. Shipping cost to the UK is ridiculous but I bought 2 boxes, I've got a box and a half left so it's great value for money. If my hair darkens in the next week I'll probably do the same thing next week, and try a lighter dye. I skipped the processing lotion because of all the negative things I heard about it, even if my hair does darken all it would have done is darkened it prematurely.

I can't believe how much I love the colour, it suits my skin tone so much better than the dark, dark red. I barely noticed the smell, if I'm honest, whilst not pleasant it wasn't overbearing. I just wish they stocked it over here. I'd gladly recommend this to anyone with a build-up of permanent dye, as it shifts almost all of it off. It's not harmful, and so is the best place to start if you're looking to go lighter without bleaching 2/3 times.

i was very scared to use this product and i waited 3 weeks after buying it to use it. i had been bleach blonde for 6 years and decided that i wanted to be a light blonde. according to 7 different hairdressers red and blonde are the same thing. needless to say my hair was red so i dyed a blackish red color. i looked like a dead person. i have naturally auburn hair so i was afraid that when i used this that it would be bright orange. I used it exactly how it said (didnt use step 3) and it is perfect. it did turn out orange but after 2 days it darkened to a really nice brownish red color. i have had alot of compliments so far. everyone's hair is different so there is going to be different reactions. it worked awesome for me.
