Preventing & Treating Ingrown Hairs
When will I outgrow ingrown hairs?
Ingrown hairs can be caused by a number of factors (or a combination of 'em): waxing technique, naturally coarse hair, shaving in the wrong direction or extremely dry skin. Ingrown hairs are not only unsightly, but they're also a real pain and can become infected. Avoid the temptation to pick at them; it can cause more of a mess than you started with and can leave a permanent mark.
No matter if you wax, shave or sugar, there's a few simple steps you can take to avoid ingrown hairs.
Christiane Silveira, co-owner of Sweet Samba Spa in Atlanta says that exfoliating is essential before any method of hair removal.
Buff skin with a grainy scrub, exfoliating cream or loofah the day before you wax. Also, make sure skin is dry and free of any potential pore-cloggers.
Try Woody's Exfoliating Pre Shave Cleanser to gently loosen hair and skin that can roadblock pores before shaving. Ingrown sufferers can also try a pre-shave oil such as Anthony Sport Pre-Shave Oil to soften hairs and prevent them from being trapped.
Create a tab with the waxing strip and pull in the opposite direction from the hair growth pattern at a 180 degree angle, horizontal to the skin.
Shaving correctly helps prevent ingrown hairs from blemishing your baby smooth skin. Shave with the grain, not against it.
After sugaring, wash the treated area with warm water immediately to remove any sticky residue and apply an unscented skin lotion to soothe the skin.
If an ingrown hair pops up despite your best efforts to prevent 'em, confront it face to face with a topical treatment product such as TendSkin which heals ingrown hairs and calms razor burn. The trick is that treatment products will speed the healing process, but it's best to wait twenty-four to forty-eight hours after hair removal before applying the treatment, to avoid irritating already sensitive skin. If part of your ingrown is visible above the skin, try pointed tip tweezers such as Rubis Cosmetic Tweezers to get a precise grip and evict the hair without breaking the skin.
