The tourmaline acts as a healing stone, generating negative ions and healing properties that lock in moisture, sealing the cuticle and stabilizing the pH level of the hair. After six years or so, my Superstar flat iron has finally started to bite the dust. It still straightens perfectly, but the power won't stay on unless the cord is held at a particular angle in a particular spot. I was hoping to find something a bit cheaper than the Superstar, so I started experimenting with other less costly (but still highly rated) professional quality irons. Quite frankly, none of them come even remotely close to matching the performance of the Superstar. My ancient Superstar only heats up to 400 F, but still straightens more quickly than the others I've tried that allow higher temperatures. The swivel cord turns smoothly and easily, and even when my super curly hair is at it's longest, I can straighten it in under 20 minutes. It heats up quickly and doesn't pull my hair like some of the other straighteners. After buying (and returning!) a couple other flat irons and trying out a few of my friends' irons, I can honestly say that I've yet to find one that holds a candle to the Superstar. However, one thing I've noticed is that the description for the newer "original" Superstar iron says that it has "self-leveling floating plates." My old Superstar doesn't have these, and since I have never met a "floating plate" iron that I've liked, I'm reluctant to buy this newer version. If you have no issues with floating plates, however, and are looking for a flat iron that will last ages (at least as far as hair straighteners are concerned!) and straightens better than most other professional quality irons, I highly recommend the Superstar! My friend gave me this as a loaner when she had it refurbished. I loved it more than the other POS's (Conair, Jilbere) I had. After 6 months in my possession (1.5 years in my friends possesion) it is not as hot as 450 degrees. And recently a plate became loose. I think we got our $120 worth out of it, actually! I use it everyday, and it did what it needed to do. Nothing last forever!
