My roomate set the solia at the 400 degree setting and I just kept it that way. Big mistake! My individual hairs are breaking in half. So here is what I think I learned: If you do not have extremely coarse hair (ie, Native American) do not put it up the highest setting. Other irons don't get as hot as this one, so be careful.
Yes, you can even curl your hair with this flat iron! submitted by: blknazn637, Thu Jan 19 2006

If you want loose big curls, straighten your hair from root to tip as you normally would, but once your hair is in between the plates, flip the iron backwards and continue to move it down your hair. When you are done your hair should have some incredible curls! It works best if your hair is straightened prior to this.

I have crazy, coarse, frizzy hair so to tame it to a smooth sleek look this is what I do. First I get a great haircut. Because I have lots of volume, layers are absolutely necessary, otherwise I look like I'm wearing a broom. Next, I like the Pantene Smooth and Sleek line. I use that during the week and once a week I used the Pantene Clarifying Shampoo and Deep Moisturizing Treatment. The final rinse is always with cool water. Then I dry using a good ionic hair dryer. I like to dry upside down to create volume (now that I have a good cut) and use the cool setting at the final pass. Then I clip my hair up in sections so that I straighten the longer layers first, then do the short layers. I love this 1" Solia Tourmaline Ceramic flat iron. It heats up quickly and has the adjustable heat setting. Sometimes when I want really super-glossy hair I use Biosilk Silk Therapy after all this, but just a dab. Then I really do have "commercial" hair - just beautiful - and it's really mine!
