Meh - I'm over this flat iron

I've used this flat iron for 7-years, mostly because I didn't know any better that there were other better types of flat iron.
My issues with this flat iron are:
1. Split end city. This iron will rip your hair up because of the hair eating hinge and the actual plates that tend to grab tight and offer little slickness for your hair to glide through.
2. It's heavy and frumpy to deal with.
3. These things break, although I have seen reviews for other brands having way shorter life spans and since all I've ever used is this brand, maybe I just don't know. But the last two have broken in the exact same fashion - they are made entirely of plastic and the plastic around the hinge becomes dry and brittle and completely snaps leaving the top plate just hanging by the inner wires. This seems to happen every 3-years.
4. There's no heat control.
Pros:
1. This thing travels in my suitcase across continents. It hangs out in padding in airplane cargo ... with all the travel I guess 3-years before the plastic crumbles is better than I give it credit for. Although maybe I am packing it safely and maybe other brands would travel well too?
2. I like the comb on the end of it. Makes it easy to straighten hair.
3. The tip is made so you can grip it tight without burning your finger tips.

I have natually curly, thick, coarse hair...there are very few stylist that can even straighten my hair properly. This flat iron made my hair so soft, shiny and smooth. The comb makes the biggest difference in the world. Highly recommend it!!!
I'm a stylist and i've had it for 8 years

I have had this iron for 7 years. I have tried all of my friends top irons, but nothing even comes close in comparison. I have always gotten compliments on how silky my hair looks and I owe it all to this straightener. I pretty much use it everyday, and my hair still looks healthy and not dried out. I think the best part about it as well is the comb attached. I guess its something you have to get used to because my friends always take it out when they borrow it, but the comb makes your hair look naturally straight especially at the ends. It's crazy how bad and obvious some peoples hair looks when they straighten it with an iron without a comb. Therefore everyone should hands down go with this iron versus any other out there.
hot enough to burn me

This straightener works as well as some of the cheaper brands I've purchased in the past. The only hope is that this one will last longer than many of those did. It does a nice job of straightening and does not snag or pull hair. I don't like that this straightener has no temperature contol and seems to get overly hot. It gets hot enough to burn my fingers on my hair when handling my hair after running the straightener through it.
best hair straighener evverrr!!!

I have fine, frizzy very curly hair. I used to blow dry my hair as straight as it could get, then use a flat iron to get it the staightest. Yet about an hr. later my hair would be frizzy wavy and curly again. Ive probably owned over 20 flat irons before the Sapphire iron.
I purchased the Sapphire iron from my hairdressers during my grade 8 grad. My hair looked so healthy, shiny and staight I had a hard time convincing people I have natuarlly curly hair.
It just died a few months ago when I was on vacation!
Lasted me 11 yrs.
Best darn flat Iron hands down.

I rate this as the BEST flat iron EVER!!! I'm ordering another one today because I woke up this morning and was about to get ready for work and switched on my flat iron and it has finally died on me. Needless to say, I have used it everyday for the past 7 years! It never broke, nor did the plastic melt. I wrap the cord around mine and put it up all the time, so the only thing I believe that brought the death of my flat iron was a short in the cord where it actually runs into the iron. They've actually come down on the prices also. Awesome!!
Nice and Sleek

I just bought this iron and just received it yesterday. I used it for the first time this morning. At first, it was kind of hard to use because I have smaller hands. Once I got used to the iron, I began seeing the nice sleek look that I was hoping for. My hair dresser has used this same iron for the past 4 years and I loved my hair every single time she used it. I think it takes some getting used to if you normally use a smaller sized iron, but it seems like it is doing the job.
It makes a BIG difference..

I bought my 1st flat iron in Italy. When it died on me, I thought I would too. I found the SOLANO Model 11/210 1 3/8in on-line and truly love it. I have NAPPY hair (you'd never know), that looks shiny, straight and soft. I it use on my way out to work in the morning no more than 6 mins (timed)and get compliments from passers-by all the time. I went on an international trip recently where the voltage is 220; I put an adapter on the plug and that was that. I DO recommend the Solano flat iron highly. A couple of tips: hold the thinner of the 2 handles on the top (right hand) comb straight out until the (almost) ends and curve in a bit. Start by combing hair forward and start at the base working your way to the top center, then the sides, to the front. Hope this helps you as much as it has me!!!

I have used many flat irons from Hot Tools, to Chi, to Sedu and this has been my favorite so far. I have baby fine frizzy, fly-away hair and this met my every need. I give it an A.

I got this as gift 7 years ago...and after all the abuse and travel...it finally broke down on me. After reading some reiews, I see that it's still the one to get. I'm getting another one!

This is my third purchased from folica. First off, this is a wonderful company to order from. They deliver as promised But I did not care for this item at all. I thought the combs would be an advantage. I find that they are not. They get stuck in my hair plus because of the combs, I have difficulty placing my hair in the flat iron. I think because of the combs the iron is unable to open up enough. Also I don't think it grabs the hair good. Folica has a money back guarentee that I should have taken advantage of, but I didn't. If you want a great inexpensive flat iron go for the solia!

I just bought my first Solano flat iron because my hair stylist uses it on my hair and it always feels so wonderful and healthy, not dried out and straw-like like other irons do. I absolutely love this iron!!!! Highly recommended!

I love my solano flat irom it's the best in the whole world i sleep with it every night and if there was a fire in my house thats the first thing i would grab not kids but the iron. One time I beat my husband with it when he tried to throw it away because he felt that i loved my flat iron more than him so i recommend that every women or man gets one.

This hairdryer was totally worth buying--it always gets the job done. My only complaint is that it's a little small...it's hard to feel like it's working. But otherwise, excellent!
Will Not Stray from the Solano Again!

I had a Solano flat iron that lasted several years-- I stopped using it because the wiring became exposed and electrical tape wasn't covering it (this probably wouldn't have happened if I took better care of it) I tried a few other straighteners but they all seemed to fry my hair, so I recently went back to the Solano.. and I will not buy another brand again! I love how the comb guides my hair through the straightener and I only have to go over my hair once. The heatproof mat/sleeve from Folica is also great because I don't have to wait for the iron to cool down before throwing it in my bag etc.
Did they change something..

These irons last forever, so the last time I bought this iron was three years ago. Did they change something? We're still paying the same amount but the iron is made cheaper. I'm going to return the one I got and see if it comes back in better shape.

I have long hair and have been partially highlighting it for 20 years. In the last ten, I've been using a flat iron. I love this iron because it has a comb attached and it makes flat ironing easy. This is the second Solano Sapphire Flat Iron I have purchased in the last 10 years. They really last a long time. I have purchased other flat irons and I keep going back to this one.

This is a great flat iron for both home use and travel. It works well and makes my hair smooth and shiny. I don't have a problem with my hair getting caught like a few other people mentioned in their reviews.

This was my first flat iron. I got it in 7th grade and it lasted until my junior year in HS when black stuff started to crack and it shorted. I loved it so much. I found the comb an annoyance at the time but now that I have a chi i miss the attached comb. I didnt know i oculd get another saphire iron so i went with a Chi and I am not pleased with it at all.
