Peter Solomon was born in raised in the Boston area (Wellesley). At 18, he left for the Midwest to attend Carleton College in Northfield, MN (the town motto is “Cows, Colleges, and Contentment.”) where he was a history major. There, he earned an award for my senior thesis (an examination of nationalism in America and France between 1870 and 1900) and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
He spent the next four years marketing products for American Express before attending Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management (the top-ranked B-school in the US) for his MBA where he graduated Beta Gamma Sigma (top 10% of his class).
While in school, he worked on a business plan with some classmates in an entrepreneurship class that led to State St. Barbers. The idea was based on their personal frustration with the options available to men looking for grooming services: the discount chains delivered inconsistent service and didn’t make customers feel special; the high-end salons were overpriced and tailored to women. They wanted to create an environment specifically for guys that was masculine, affordable, offered top quality service, and aligned to men’s busy schedules, hence, why we are open seven days a week, until 9PM Mon-Thurs).
Immediately after grad school he spent 5 years working for the management consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton. State St Barbers opened their first shop in Chicago in December 2003 and their second in April 2005.
Solomon decided he wanted to move back to Boston and pursue this venture full time, so he quit his consulting job and did just that. As such, this is allowing him to spend more time with his family, including my 16-month old daughter. The Boston shop opened in mid-March, 2006.
