Stop Mavala mascara smudging

I use Body Shop Elderflower Eye Gel, which I guess must be water-based, because my Mavala Waterproof Mascara NEVER EVER smudges. I guess those who do find it smudges either have oily skin or use oil-based moisturiser, which of course will "melt" your mascara. Powdering the area around your eyes before using mascara can also help.
