I finally decided to do something abou my son's finger sucking. It was getting more common and was affecting his front teeth. We are at day 16 since he quit. He wears a sock on his hand at night and when he thinks he might suck his finger. He is 3 1/2 yrs old.
Works Great!!!

I've purchased products that were supposed to taste bad in the past and was disappointed. But so far this stuff really works! It's not so much an instant bad taste, more gradual, but it stays in your mouth and really keeps you from biting again. Just make sure you re-apply every other day!
It Works!

This product works! I purchased this product for my 4 year old who started to bite his nails. I had already tried another product which I bought from Target. This did not work at all. So I was pretty apprehensive about purchasing another polish claiming to help stop the nail bitting. But after reading the positive claims, I decided to go ahead and give it a try. At the very least, I thought if it did not work, I could write my own negative review to discourage others from purchasing it.
My son stopped bitting his nails immediately. Within one week I needing to actually cut then. One word of advise, you must keep applying the polish. I went about 4 days in between applications and he started bitting again. It has only been about 2 weeks since I started using it, but I would absolutely recommend it.
Nasty taste! but washes off

This stuff is NASTY! I almost feel sorry for my 6 year old who knaws his fingers (not just nails, but skin too) all day. But he sure can't stand the taste of these and quickly stopped with the bad habit.
One difference from what the instructions state is that it doesn't actually last two days if the person actually baths or washes their hands. I guess they test this on dirty kids... my kid is nothing of the sort and washes his hands a lot, so we ended up having to put it on twice a day if we wanted to make sure he was "covered".
I never did look into if the stuff wasn't harmful but if its this nasty then they really don't take much in anyways.
Great product though!!
A must buy

My daughter is 10, 2 finger sucker, and we tried everything already mentioned by others. It really worked for about the first 15 days with every other day application but it has since waned. Over the past month and a 1/2 we have used up the bottle and she is back at it full force. Yikes! I will order another bottle and attempt to put it on twice a day - the habit is quite strong. I don't know what else to try. Those of you who have younger children...you may want to pull out the big guns when they are young. Her twin was a thumb sucker and she naturally stopped sucking.
Finally something that's so bad it works

My almost-8-year-old has sucked her thumb since birth. We've tried rewards, punishment (took her favorite blankie away a year ago), the regular capsaisin nail polish (she got used to it in one night), the very expensive plastic thumb guard recommended by her orthodontist (she figured out how to stretch it out to get her thumb out to suck it, which her orthodontist had never heard of!): all to no avail. The MAVALA STOP is so nasty that she cried for 15 minutes the first time she got it in her mouth, begged me to take it off, but I could not relent. IT IS ACTUALLY KEEPING HER THUMB OUT OF HER MOUTH, EVEN WHILE SLEEPING, which is the most difficult time. She says she's cured, after only 2 weeks, but I know better, and we're going to keep using it all summer. An ingrained habit like this is as hard to break as an adult habit, like smoking (I know!). I'm so thankful for finding this that I'm going to recommend it to her ortho and dentist. At such a small price, it is more than worth it and even if it doesn't work the first time, I'll buy more until she's 15 if I have to.
Did not work for my finger sucking child

The first day we got this my 3 year old son would spit everytime he put his fingers in his mouth, so I thought it would work. He is a serious finger sucker (his first 2 fingers on his right hand). He also started picking his nose while he sucks his fingers (yuck!). I really wanted to stop this habit before he starts preschool next fall. This product seemed promising from all the great reviews. My son must be tough because after the first day of using the product he was sucking full speed. I tried painting the mavalo all up and down the entire fingers he sucks, instead of just on the nail. It didn't matter. He would suck away and then just wipe his tongue on his shirt when he was done. I am disappoited and don't know what to try now, as this product seemed to have the best results of any available.

I'm a mother of a 6year old who started sucking his fingers again after finding out I was pregnant. !7 months later I told him about this product and when he wanted to stop we would try it. It has been 2.5 weeks and he hasn't sucked his fingers at all. Thank you so much for this product. Sincerely, concerned mom

I tried this product on my daughter who just constantly chews her nails (both fingers and toes) and the taste did not phase her one bit. I tried the product several times, but it still did not deter her from chewing her nails.
There was one time where I had gotten a taste of it and I did not like it. In fact, I had to get a drink in order to get the taste out of my mouth. So in my oppinion for a small child it may not work as well as it may seem, but for an adult who has their taste buds set it very well could work.
Worked in a few days!

My daughter was a chronic thumb sucker to the point that her front teeth were starting to buck out. At 3 1/2 years, we decided to try to help her stop with Mavala. It worked instantly! I thought maybe after we stopped using it, she would resume old habits, but she has not. The one warning I have is that she occasionally had the horrible experience of tasting the stuff when eating. So, we just tried really hard to remind her to keep her thumb out of the way when she put food in her mouth.

BRAVO!! I believe that this was an answer from God Himself!! Thank you for this wonderful product. We applied this polish to her nails and immediately she stopped sucking her thumb!!!

My husband and I were a little skeptical about it, but the stuff really does work. Infact it worked within 3 days. The first night was a little rough, but after that it was great. My 2.5 year old is now thumb sucking free.

MY DAUGHTER ACTUALLY HAS THE BEGINNINGS OF NAILS AFTER ABOUT 2 WEEKS! SHE CRIED A LOT THE FIRST DAY OR TWO UNTIL SHE BROKE THE HABIT. NOW WE STILL PAINT HER NAILS EVERY OTHER DAY (SOMETIMES EVERY 3RD DAY) AND SHE DOES NOT PUT HER FINGERS OR HANDS IN HER MOUTH AT ALL. THE STUFF DOES TASTE PRETTY BAD, BUT HAS NOT CAUSED ANY CHANGES IN HER EATING HABITS...ONLY HER NAILBITING HABITS. I AM A PHARMACIST AND AM RECOMMENDING THIS PRODUCT TO ANYONE WHO ASKS ME ABOUT WHAT TO USE FOR NAILBITERS. THANKS.
Works really great, but taints food.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter sucked her thumb all the time, and would sometimes pull her hair out while sucking her thumb to rub the hair on her cheek (a comfort thing). She had a huge bald spot on top of her head, and we tried everything to get her to stop pulling. Nothing worked, so I decided to try to stop the thumb-sucking instead of the hair-pulling in hopes that if she stopped sucking her thumb, she'd no longer pull her hair out. She stopped sucking her thumb within about 3 days, which is a miracle since she would suck all the time. The hair-pulling stopped, too, and within a couple of weeks, I could tell her hair was growing and thickening up a bit. Well, unfortunately, her hair is looking thin again and a slight bald patch is forming again.
But still no thumb-sucking (it's been almost a month). So, this product works great for what it was really intended for, I just wish it would have been a miracle-worker for us and stopped the hair-pulling (although it's not as bad as before). Oh, the only complaint I have is that it does come off on food if you touch the food with your thumb, but I guess my daughter got used to it because she quit complaining after a few days. Also, I applied it once a day, not every other day like it says to because it does wear off by the next day.

my 7 year old has had this habit since she started grade k, and i could not find any way to get her to stop. after several attempts at taking away activities, toys, etc i started looking for other solutions. this started working from day 1 because after i put it on she later put her fingers in her mouth and hated the taste. this stuff stays on for long periods of time, but i recommend once a day just to reinforce your point.
super bitter stuff

have more than a couple of problems that this product resolved. My 12 y/o nailbiter and 10 y/o thumbsucker both stopped after 2 days. The product is really disgusting. Before applying it on their fingers, I tasted it and gagged for about 5 minutes. My 2 y/o who would not stop breastfeeding was moving his head "no" after tasting it once (felt bad about it but it worked).Would recommend this product, really
