#1 - Do NOT rinse your hair out in a light-colored tub, shower or sink. I really recommend doing it outside or in a sink that you don't really care about. I rinsed the Pillarbox Red out of my hair in my white tub and the entire tub is now pink.
#2 - I suggest washing your hair with some sort of dish soap first (to dry it out) and then once the dye is on, covering it in plastic wrap and blow drying it for at least 15 minutes. I used these tricks when dying my naturally dark brown hair Pillarbox Red and the color turned out great!
#3 - Buy some sort of brush to help you apply the dye. I wasn't thinking and ended up using a plastic bag and piping it onto my hair like icing. It worked, but it was super messy!
All that being said - buy this stuff!! It's awesome!

Once you have dyed your hair you will notice the multitude of stains. For tub and counter [and for some walls] put any whitening tooth paste and leave it on until it dries then scrape it of or you could make a paste of strong detergent and water that should work too. For skin use toot paste on none sensitive areas and let it soak the rub away and rinse with cold water. for more sensitive areas or you don't like the idea of covering your arms with paste use some shampoo and put it onto the stained skin and rub brush if it doesn't hurt and wash away with cold water.

bleach hair first for best color, shampoo but no conditioner. If you don't like bleach,on clean unconditioned hair pour hydrogen peroxide on hair until saturated, do not rinse, let dry completely. Now with dry bleached or peroxided hair. apply vaseline to face & neck (so they don't get dyed too) and use latex gloves and wear clothes you don't care if they get dyed. apply product throughly. Ok this is the part that makes it really last!! It's a vegetable dye it won't kill you. blow dry it until dry, then cover with scarf or bandana of same color and go to bed (towel on pillow advised) rinse out 12 to 24 hours from start time, but do not shampoo until one week later. (and invest in a good leave in conditioner) rinsing w/o shampoo feels great and lessens color loss in between washes. i left in in for 48 hrs last august on its fading now in march. i have been dying my hair like this for 8 years and still have soft healthy hair.

Rinse with COLD water.Don't wash hair after intial washing for at least three days. I know it sounds gross but it will help and also don't wash it with steaming hot water the first few times (the heat open the cuticle/cortex and allows color to flow out). For reds, red shampoos to tend to help a little not a lot but some. Don't wash hair everyday every other day, for those of us who can't stand greasy hair (if you lightenhair first it is damage to the point that oils don't get overwhelming for a few weeks), wear a hat or bandana the second day.

As a stylist and consumer for over 10 years using punky colors this is what I have found to work. If your not using bleach to prelighten first , wash your hair with a clarifiyng shampoo or dawn dish soap(cheaper) You want your hair to feel more dry not greasy. Dry = porous and that's what you want so the color will penetrate deeper. When you apply make sure you thoroughly saturate by combing thru. Put on a shower cap and let the steam heat from the shower help it along. Although it says you can rinse in 15 min. don't . Leave it in for at least 30min. Rinse with cool water till clear and towel dry. Now here's the trick... apply a demi-permanent clear over the punky. I use Redken Shades but Wella 000 clear will do. This serves to coat and seal the hair strands so there is less fading and less transfer like to your pillow or shirts. Leave this on for 15- 20 min and rinse well, condition with a protein conditioner and you should have soft hair with outrageous color that lasts.

I can't remember for sure, but I think on the container it says to wash your hair first, and then apply on damp hair. Don't do it. You hair should awlways be dry, and a little dirty too. The color sticks better when your hair getting greasy.
To make it last longer, before shampooing and after the water stops flowing whatever color you used, dip your fingers in viniger and piece through your hair with it. That's a tip my stylist told me.
