OH YEAH!!! If you are not careful when dyeing, like dye in general, you can end up with the color all over your room, changing your tub color, and even staining pillow cases. Don't worry there is a solution. Protect yourself and surroundings. lay down old towels or blankets, wear old pajamas to dye in. Taking showers, cooler water makes the color run less. Also leaning forward to wash your hair helps for the bleeding color not to dye your spine. | | Reply by Amber

It leaks the first and sometimes second time you wash your hair, but if you scrub it good, and get all of the excess dye out, then after blow drying it, it will stay in your hair. But when you are dying it, put a towel around your shoulders to ensure it doesn't stain your clothes. | | Reply by sandy

get some punk off. after first shampoo it's ok but until then protect anything u don't want dyed. just bleach your shower after the 1st shampoo. takes it out no problem. recomend dark clothes @ first so the dye wont show if it does transfer. | | Reply by Bre-Bre

Gosh... I would guess about 3 or 4. | blue hair dye and chlorine
My son wants his hair blue. I'm fine with that, but he goes to camp and swims in chlorinated water everyday. I don't care if it fades the color, I just don't want the water to turn blue as soon as he gets in it!! Question posted by Jen Fri Jul 21 2006 Submit your answer | Reply by sandy

My husband swam in high school and his team dyed their hair blue with Punky Colors for a meet. In the time it took to swim to one end of the pool and back, the color had leaked out almost completely. Chlorinated water is horrible for semi permanent dyes. | Heat Or No Heat
When I apply the color to bleached hair, is it bad to put it under the dryer to really get the color to seep in more..? or does it totally ruin the process Question posted by Halee Mon May 22 2006 Submit your answer | Reply by Dee

I have been reading all about tips and tricks for using these colours, and the best results have come to me using THIS product. I coat my hair in the morning, wrap the whole shebang in Saran Wrap, put a shower cap over top, and go about my day (at home, of course... lol). I also heat my scalp with the blow dryer every hour or so. I don't know which is the key factor, but I do know that I have gorgeous dark pink hair! | | Reply by Brea -Bre

It helps the process big time!!! i have done it both ways and trust me the dryer is the key especially if you are useing foils ! | mixing colors?
Have you mixed colors before? I bought violet and think it might be too light or flourescent. I still want to use it though. I have black, Asian hair and want to color the gray and give the remaining black a purple sheen. How about if I mix Blue-Black with the Violet to tone the Violet down? How bright do you want them? If you want them subtle but visible, medium brown will do. Go for light brown if you want them a bit brighter. If you want them to be the exact color of the dye itself, you'd better go for something very close to white. Whatever you do, it is best to use a toner to take the yellow/red out of your bleached hair because your underlying hair color affects the finished color. | | Reply by Ryan

Go get a cheap bleaching kit from the supermarket or pharmacy, and get it the strongest that you can see. The apply the bleach to the hair you want dyed. Since you have black hair and want it blue, don't worry too much about the roots. Leave the bleach in there for as long as you can handle it or two hours. This has gotten my hair lighter than the professional salon I went to.
Essentially, you want it as light as possible to provide as good of a canvas for the blue so it doesn't turn green/purple when it washes out. | | Reply by lolli

yes!!! any gold or yellow AT ALL will leave you with green or blue green results... hair must be AS LIGHT AS POSSIBLE!!! blue will stick to any bleach job, but likely to fade faster and with more green than blue if on dark yellow hues... | | Reply by Brea -Bre

you want to bleach it as blonde as you can get it trust me i have jet black hair and unless you want orange hair go all the way :D | How to bleach black hair?
I have pondered dying parts of my hair blue for quite a while now, and I finally think that this summer I will pick up the courage to do so. :D I'm going with the punky blue black and hoping for a striking, bold, bright, but dark-ish blue. This is definitely my first time dying my hair, partly because I basically have jet-black hair and I do a lot to it, namely chlorine from the pool 6 days a week, and am not looking for a brittle, dry look no matter how much I will enjoy the color. It being my first time, I don't mind it fading or being faint or whatever, but I realize that I will need to bleach if I want it to show up AT ALL (right?) I need advice bleaching beforehand...what to use (would the punky bleaching kit work?) and how to avoid that gross bleached-red/pink...HELP!should I go for it? Blue black will still be black not a good choice.Manic panic has a bright blue. chlorine and bleach is not a good combination for healthy hair and if you have a relaxer your hair may not be strong enough for bleach, maybe you should ask someone in a shop to take a look at your hair and ask their advice before you try it. | first time1
it's my first time ever doing this to my hair, what should i know, and do i really need to dye it blonde first, (think dark-ish brown hair) Question posted by lauren Mon Jun 13 2005 Submit your answer | Reply by J.K

If you want the color to show well, you should probably try to bleach it first. | | Reply by xENA

If you want your hair to be the color of the dye, you need to bleach it. The more you bleach, the more intense the color will be. If you don't bleach, then the dye will give a slight color sheen to your dark brown hair.
1. More bleaching = more intense color. No bleaching = slight tinting of hair.
2. Cover everything you don't want colored - namely counters, clothing, etc. Protect yourself with a towel around your shoulders.
3. Punky Colors will come off skin with enough rubbing, but you can apply Vaseline to the edges of your face if you want. I never do.
4. 1 jar = short hair, 2 jars = shoulder length-mid back, 3 jars = enough for anyone with leftovers.
5. Applying the dye with your fingers will ensure you cover everything and use the dye most effeciently. Just apply a dollop to your roots and pull the dye down the rest of the hair.
6. Take the leftover dye and mix it with your conditioner. This way, every time you condition, you deposit a little color on your hair. Keeps the color bright.
7. Leave dye in your hair for at least 30 minutes or for as long as you can wait. Blowdrying (aka applying heat) will make the color process faster and go deeper into your hair's cuticle. I like to leave the dye in for at least an hour.
7. If you don't like the color, you can cover it with a brown permanent haircolor. When I had to cover my pink to get a job, I went to Target, got some dark brown haircolor and had reddish-brown hair in about an hour. |
