When it's hot, clean it with alcohol. That will get any gunk off!
iron cleaner

If you use finishing sprays or other leave in products they will sometimes fry onto your iron and may be hard to clean or scratch off. Then every time you plug it in it will smell like something is burning. Well, just so you know hot tools sells an iron cleaner for their irons. I'm not sure if folica sells it but it's out there.
