not a waste if you can't afford the best

I would rate this product a little higher than most. If you can't afford to spend the money on a fancy ceramic, fact is, this thing will indeed get your hair straight.
It does have minor problems. The body does tend to get a bit hot. It does grab a hair from time to time, more as time goes on.
On the up-side though, this baby's hot. Compared to a drug store brand (such as a Conair, which I once had, and which cost about the same amount)... well, there is NO comparison. This baby steams that moisture out and leaves your hair essentially salon-straight. I have never once regretted buying it.
That said, I am now planning on upgrading. I don't have any illusions that it is the same quality as a nice, expensive ceramic. But when I bought it I couldn't afford 150 bucks for a hair appliance - and if you can't either, I wouldn't hesitate to buy this one. I've had mine for two years and it's still as hot as ever. I have at least four friends with the same one and their experiences are similar.
it worked on my thick, frizzy, curly Q hair

i went to ocean city to visit my cousins and one of them wondered what my hair looked like if it were straight. So, she straightened it but at first, i didnt think it would work bcus i had attempted to straighten my hair b4 and it stood out like a FREAKIN AFRO! but this time, it didnt. it laid smoothly and it didnt frizz at all. so, i found out what brand it was, went home and ordered it form the internet and i have used it ever since

The iron does a fair job of straightening your hair -- but hair gets caught and it is ripped out by this straight iron. It's BAAAAD news!

I have owned about 10 straighteners in my lifetime, and I have to say that this one was the worst. I was really pinning my hopes on it, thinking it would do my hair wonders because I bought it from a hair dresser. I was so excited to try it out and when I did, my hopes were crushed. The stupid thing didn't even heat up! I checked several times if everything was correct; plugged in, turned on, etc. It took me about 20 minutes to iron about one section of hair, and it wasn't even that straight. It left my hair frizzy, dry, and NOT STRAIGHT. Please, DO NOT buy this straightener! The price reflects its perfromance and quality: CHEAP! It was a waste of money and time. Don't buy it.
It worked great for 4 months

I bought this from my stylist and it worked great for the first few months. All of a sudden it just stopped heating up. I told my stylist about it and she asked me if I saved my warranty that came with the product. Who saves those?? So to sum it up I've stopped going to her since she couldn't even exchange the product after it stopped working after 4 months. Don't buy it unless you want to spend another $25-$50 after it breaks to get a new one.
Works? NO!!!

I wouldn't recommend buying this product. It works for about 3-6 months and then it doesn't heat up on you. you try like seven different outlites that you know work and the flat iron dosn't work. I think from reading the other reviews that u should buy this product, and keep reading reviews it helps you decide on which flat iron to buy.

Why it breaks often

My wife's Hot Tools flat iron broke recently.
I took it apart and found out why. They use solid wires instead of braided wires around the spring joint. So everytime you squeeze the handles together, the solid wire bends back and forth.
Eventually, it breaks, but sometimes the broken ends touch. Thus it work on and off as you squeeze it.
Poor design, they should use braided wires, especially since Alternating Current travels better through braided wire than solid wire.
Don't buy it.

I loved my Hot Tools Flat Iron...for the 10 months that it lasted! It was excellent while it worked, my hair always looked great and straightened in record time, until the day that it randomly stopped heating up in the middle of doing my hair.

When I first started using Hot Tools it worked great on my thick wavy long hair. I preferred it to the Blue Sapphire ceramic iron it worked so well. But just as the other irons I've used (Helen of Troy, Revlon, & other drug store brands) they started to become disfunctional about a month after use. Over 5 years I've probably bought about 10 different irons by the Helen of Troy/Hot Tools company and have been faced with the following issues:
1. The iron will start to melt itself (self destruction?!)
2. It cracks without me dropping it or abusing it
3. Starts off with an usual burning odor, once or twice the iron started to give off smoke
4. One side of the plates stops heating up
5. The light turns off when the plates are brought together and turns back on when released. - most common
6. Hair gets caught (and ripped out) in the cracks between the plate and the plastic
I kept buying them because they were the cheapest and worked the best, but these problems make the product not worth buying. If you're looking for a one night stand (something cheap to use for a short period of time) then definately go with the Hot Tools.

When I was in 7th grade i bought my first flat iron, a cheap thing from a drug store and for awhile it worked just as well as the $150.00 ones but after awhile it gave in so i invested in a hot tools flat iron. I became addicted and straightened my hair so much i thought it didnt look good when it was curly anymore (i have thick short curly hair). my hair started to fry, and it did not look healthy anymore. to fix that problem, i started deep conditioning my hair at night and it worked wonders. so if your having that problem, i suggest yo try that. anyway, after a year or so my hot tools iron broke and i bought a new one..a few months later..that one broke..soo i bought a new one. after 2 irons that one broke, and the plates were still gold (after awhile the gold plates turn to silver if the flat iron is really old). there's no reason it should have broken down like that, i never curled the cord up or used it on damp hair. these things cost $24.00 for a reason, i do not think anyone should buy this flat iron. it WILL let you down in the future! and take care of your hair! don't fry the hell out of it!

This product was great when i first bought it, then about 2 months later it started to fall apart. The spring broke first. then about 6 months later, both of the plates didnt heat anymore. Well, it was only 25 dollars, so i guess i got what i paid for. Heats great, but falls apart fast. it is now a year later and the plates dont heat anymore. If you are buying a staightener, definitely go with the higher end ceramic plates, these plates did more than average damage to my hair. Thanks for reading.
it really works

I have SUPER curly, thick, long hair. And I have chose this product above all others for about 4 years now. The only downfall is that it tends to fall apart after about 4-6 months. It seems to be made a little bit cheap. And like all other hair straighteners does a lot of damage on the hair. But otherwise...I think its a wonderful style tool, and I have recommended it to several people.

I have bought several hair straighters, such as, conair, a ceramic and the best was this flat iron from hot tools. It's to bad you are unable to purcahse them in Canada.
Keep up the good work,

This iron basically functions like one from a drugstore. I was so dissapointed with this iron. I actually threw it out. Pay more money and get one of the higher end irons. It's worth the money to do so.

This is a really awesome product. Works great. The best Iv'e tried. I don't know if my last one was a dud or not but it only lasted a year. Now it doesn't heat anymore...I am buying another one off of this site. Hopefully it will last longer. If not, it is till worth it. I know others who have had theres for years.

When i got the Hot Tools Professional Flat Iron, i tried it. It worked so great. But after about 6-7 months it wouldn't work like it use to. It wouldn't heat up as fast as it use to, it would usually get hot in about 30 seconds, but after the 7 months i had to let it heat up for a bout 30 MINUTES, then i could straighten my hair for about 10 and let it heat up again. Not worth getting.. save ur money.
