i had this straightener for a year and yes after one year the one plate stopped getting hot. however, it was the best straightener in the entire world. i have extremely thick hair and it made it amazingly soft and straight and not dead at all. the blow dryer did most the damage to my hair, not the straightener. I had a straightener before this one that lasted 3 years however, it did nothing i wanted it to do. Id rather spend 50 bucks every year for this straightener then spend 150 on one that last 3 years and doesn't do what I want. So i highly recommend it if you have extremely thick hair and have yet to find something that can straighten it the right and fast way.
i have thick hair too

It worked pretty well within the first 6 months I had it. Now it frys my hair. It lasts long too I have had it for almost 2 full years now. My hair doesn't always stay straight though. I would recommend buying another straightener though if you want lasting quality

I have very thick, frizzy hair, and this flat iron did not do the trick. I would only recommend purchasing this product if you already have relatively tame hair that isn't very thick. Otherwise, spend the extra 40 bucks and buy yourself a Solia. You won't regret it, not matter what your current hair is like.
i love it

I am so surprised to see how many people hate this product... Hot tools is the only one that straightens my hair i mean really... others ive tried from friends and stuff just flatten my frizz. this one actually makes my hair soooooo shiny and so straight even in the rain! i used a chi and my hair went poofy in the rain. now my hair isn't so coarse or too thick but its definately difficult to work with i don' trust any other straightener than the hot tools ceramic. my friends love it too. it definately gets the job done. as for split ends. ladies come on! youre going to get damage no matter what you do! unless you leave your hair natural its going to get damaged no matter what the product claims it can provide. i let my hair airdry and put as little heat as possible! but hot tools is the product for me. and i wouldn't trade it for anything unless a straightener could change the genetic makeup of my hair! the only thing is make sure if youre going abroad anywhere that you get a voltage converter and know how to use it. i blew mine out cause too much electricity went into and now im oober pissed. :( but i love my hot tools ceramic!!! :)
Good Straightener and affordable too!

This straightener is the same kind that my hair dresser used on my hair and I love it! I bought one from TJ Maxx and it was reasonably priced. I have SUPER thick hair and I needed a new straightener so I bought this kind and it has worked great so far!

I thought this straightener was alright for awhile but I realized it wasn't anything special like it is said to be. I bought it because the place I get my hair cut said it was really good and a quality straightener. I paid too much for it, it wasn't any better than a cheap one you could buy. It straightened well but damaged my hair a lot. After awhile the ceramic covering began to go away around the sides. But even before that it damaged it my hair now it's just even worse even with using protective creams, gels, sprays, and blow drying first so its not wet. In conclusion I question it's "ceramicness" wasn't that great of a product, not worth the money. I've used better.
Btw it only straightened really well if you had it on the highest setting, which is to blame for some of the damage, but even on a lower setting I still had close to the same amount or just as much. I don't have unusually thick either, I'd say it's average.

(I actually bought a Hot tools 2 inch ceremic, model no. 1189, but I expect theyre not much different at all)
Okay, so my old straightener (babyliss PRO) had JUST broke this morning, so, I went to TJMaXx and looked through a few different selections (rusk, Hot tools, and BarBar)... I chose this one because it looked most professional and you can beat the price! I just got out of the shower, and as soon as my hair dryed, I plugged in my new straightener:
It heated up to the highest setting in about a minute, and all together took me TEN minutes to straigten my hair which is halfway down my back and extremely thick and fluffy, when I was done I had to come write a review because I just LOVE this straightener! Its better then the CHI ($150), in my opinion, its so fast and smooth! I'm dissapointed that it has such a low rating... oh well.. all I can say is buy it! Especially if you have thick/coarse/curly hair. great brand... good investment. (:
so glad I took the chance on this one!

So I have seen many reviews about this flat iron and OMG it is true! My flat iron stopped working after a year of use. It is very upsetting that I have wasted 60 bucks for a years worth of use but I can inly buy Hot tools flat irons becasue other ones I have tried are no good. I love the make but not the product.
Really? I loved mine.

I was pricing this flat iron for my lost baggage claim and was surprised to see it was rated so low. I loved mine and am really sad that it's been lost somewhere in the Philadelphia airport. I bought it about three years ago and it still worked just fine. Heats up high (I need a really high temperature) and fairly quickly. I will be replacing it promptly with the same model.
It actually lasted longer than a Wigo iron I once bought.
Broken after 3 months!!!

I got this straigtener as a gift 3 months ago. I've used it about once a week sincd then, so let's say a total of about 12 times. It is now utterly useless and burned out. I try turning it on and nothing happens. Horrible product. While it worked, I was quite happy with it, but i definitely would NOT suggest buying a product that burns out after 3 months.
Broke after only a year!

Mine totally went haywire. When I turn it on, even on the lowest setting (1), it gets extremely extremely hot!!! It has been okay up until this point, so if you want an average affordable straigtener that you dont plan on using often, go for this, if you want something you are going to use frequently and want to last, splurge and spend another 40 bucks on something that will last. I'm on here looking for another now and I think Im going to go with the Solia, I'll let yall know how it turns out.
Ps- the Hot Tools straightner fryed my hair, I am working really hard right now to get it healthy again.
Love it

I bought this straightener from ULTA in Dec of 2005... not sure where these people bought their's but I love mine. My hair is very very thick and pretty curly and I just turn it on for about two minutes and it does my hair perfect. I have had no problems. Even before I bought this one I had one of the same brand that wasn't ceramic and it worked great too. It works better than some more expensive one's that I have used of friends. So... if all of these people who posted, got their's from this site or whatever, then don't buy it here. I buy from ULTA, plus they will let you return it if it doesn't work. :)

This straightener is very bad for many reasons. It gives you awful awful awful split ends. and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. i use it for like half of my head and then it like cools off so one half of my head is wavy and one half is straight. it tears out your hair and after about an hour it will go wavy again.
it damages your hair

I was using it and I felt good but an hour later my hair was all frizzy, and wavy.A lot of use damages your hair, also gives a burnt hair smell. It gives you a lot of split ends and if you leave it too long on a piece of your hair, it could burn off. >(
its ok

It straightens your hair nicely, but after a day(or hour) at school, the back(and front) sometimes gets wavy. It's great for me because I only straighten my hair like once a month, not everyday like some others. Mine didn't brake because I barely use it. Do not buy this if you plan on straightening your hair DAILY.
