I got this flat iron for my birthday a couple years ago...back then it was a bit more pricy...around $50. I had to wait 483028289 hours for it to heat up, and after about 10 months, the handle of it fell off!!! (keep in mind, it has a 1 year warranty) It also doesn't have an automatic shut off, like most flat irons do, and one time i acc. forgot to turn it off when i left for school. I came home and the stool it was sitting on had burned, and 1/2 of the ceramic part melted.
Roit..

I have this same flat iron in a two inch version. I've had it for almost three years now, and it has yet to fail me. I checked it over before doing this review, and there is no ceramic chipping off at all. Honestly, this iron is wonderful . I honestly think the people who have bad things to say about it are not taking care of their products.
My sister has had her hot tools (it was a metal plated one) since highschool, and since she graduated from college about 5 years ago, that's over 9 years! My sister eventually bought a BaByliss ceramic, and gave the metal plated hot tools to my other sister, and it's still alive and kickin, and works just like the day she bought it.
It sucks!!

I bought this iron in January. It is now May. The ceramic has already started chipping. The handle doesn't let me open and shut the barrell, I have to squeeze it shut, and it pulls my hair!! What a waste of money!
Great Iron for the price

I have had my Hot Tools for 10 months, and finally it has worn out. At about 5-6 mths it started to chip, but it still worked. My hair snagged but only at the beginning when I was just figuring how to work it. The thing that I didn't like was if I wore my hair up in a pony tail, it would crease. Other than this it worked great.
so bad

this straightner does get hot, but the one thng i could not stand was it pulled my hair, it would get caught in the sides of the straightner so then my hair not only frizzed and ripped it burned too because it was stuck in there. i wouldnt reccomend this to anyone with long/medium thick hair, i had a lot of trouble with it.
pretty much sucks

I've had this for about 5 months now. I would not reccomend this flat iron. I have very thin and it still doesn't work on me! I straighten it at night and in the morning and about 2 hours into the school day the bottoms start getting wavyish/curlyish and then sure enough my whole head is frizzly and wavy. It damages your hair and completely ruins it. It snagged my hair too. It might just be me but I'm getting the Sedu. Maybe It will be worth my money unlike this was. I'm very dissapointed with my purchase.
Not Impressed....

I went from using a WalMart Conair straightner, which was horrible,to this Hot Tools one. I have naturally straight hair but sometimes it gets a little frizzy. My hair is also down to the middle of my back. This straightner works well for touchups and calming down frizz, but it is horrible for use on the whole head. It either does not get hot enough or it burns my hair, no happy medium. The straightner also rips my hair out because small pieces get caught in the cracks. I do not reccomend this flat iron at all.
really not worth it

this flat iron did get my very curly hair pretty straight but then a few months later the paint started chipping off and pieces of the plastic started to come off and sometimes it pulls my hair. id rather pay more for a high quality flat iron than risk damaging my hair with this poor quality iron.
Over charged??

After reading several of these reviews, I noticed that I wasn't the only one with the probelms. Also, seeing the price on here I found out that I was severely ripped off. I had to pay $100 for this exact straightener that is $39.99 on here. I used about five time and loved it ( ranging from straightening my hair once every month or so )and the paint started to chip off, well I figured that wouldn't really be a problem, until one time I straightened my hair and I had to go around school smelling like one giant piece of burnt hair ( absolutely disgusting! ). I didn't really experience the snagging but I did notice the burning of my hair. So that straightener is pretty much in the trash, as is my $100.
CHEAP?!?!?!?!.......

this product ends up making ur hair look fabulous. however, it can snag the hair if use to much hair at once. ALso i can straighten my long hair in 8-15 mins. THis is also cheap. I have been voted in my schools best hair award and its all thanks to this.
ps. i have had some straigtners in the mid 300$$$ and this just works
I gave it a chance, but it is just BAD

Now depending on what you think a good iron should do, this could go either way. It does make your hair straight. But I believe a GOOD iron will not give of a foul burning smell that stays in your hair all day (making you wish you hadn’t straightened it). I also believe that a GOOD iron will not start shedding its lining to reveal metal plates under its "ceramic" coating. I also believe a GOOD iron should not start burning and eating your hair because the parts where the "ceramic" coating burned off have nothing to make your hair glide through the iron anymore so your hair just sticks. My old stylist used this iron on my hair and I thought it was fine until I bought my own and started using it almost everyday for about a week and a half at a time (I give my hair and the iron about a 2 week break because it is natural, and I like my fro :P). After less than 2 months the coating started wearing off. I bought it in January 2006. I thought the burning smell was coming from the products i was using on my hair until my new stylist used those products on my hair and used a CHI iron which didn't make that smell at all. She said she knew the iron i was using and it was actually burning my hair. I had my hair trimmed 4 weeks ago and now i have split ends because this particular iron has been burning my hair. I have thick, nappy, african hair(from ghana) which after washing, I blow dry straight before I flat iron. When i use this iron, my hair really looks like i have come straight from the salon with a fresh, virgin relaxer but I can say that is due to my own skills. That is the only decent thing about this iron but i believe any other GOOD iron can do that WITHOUT the damage this iron is causing. If you don’t mind your hair getting damaged then go on ahead and buy this iron. I read the reviews before buying this and a lot of girls said “oh it has a warranty if it breaks!” But other people said their hair was getting caught and other horrible things. I thought maybe people didn’t know how to use it right and I thought that maybe people didn’t know what they were talking about but now I really wish I had just spent the money on a better iron because now after growing my nappy hair which some of you know how long it takes African American women to grow out their hair, I have to get it cut again because of the damage this iron caused. I hope this review helps people out there. Seriously guys, DO NOT buy a HOT TOOLS iron. They are cheap and you get exactly what you pay for. Who would even want the warranty if the iron sux anyway? But Hot Tools is good for something. I have a blow dryer from them and I love it. For the time being that is. :)

I bought this flat iron with a gift certificate from Ulta in early January. It's now, March 23 and it no longer heats up. And yes, it does rip out the hair.
Bad choice = don't buy.
Good iron, bad for your hair

I too got this flat iron for Christmas. I loved it the first few times I used it. It really tamed my frizz but every time I used it my hair got caught in between the plates and the black plastic part of the iron. So what I ended up with was a lot of short broken hairs on the top of my head.
Good for a starter Iron!

I bought this exact model iron, since my friend had the same brand and her hair always looked so amazing! however, I must agree about the hair getting caught in between the plate and the iron...so irritating....and it does take forever to get my hair straight...but after about 20 minutes I can get my hair straight with it, but it does take too long and my hair is not curly, just a bit wavy...so I only recommend this brand as a "starter iron" if you can't afford the super duper one.
yuck

At first I thought I liked this hair straightener, I was wrong. I doesn't straighten well and it definetly does last long once it is straight. Also, the design of this straightener is very poor.
Use this if you want to end up bald

This is the worst flat iron I have ever used in my life... it is not properly put together so therefore it rips your hair out causing major split ends... I hope no one wastes their money like I did.
This works great

Don’t waste your money! The iron really doesn’t work very well and by the time you do two or three sections you’re so aggravated and angry because your hair gets caught in the tool and pulled out strand by strand which we all know hurts like crazy! If you can actually get your hair out of the cracks it has broke the strand or in some way damaged it! Believe me I have tried everything… putting a narrower section of hair in so it won’t touch the sides, holding it in a brush so it won’t flatten and get in the edges nothing works.
The best straightening iron I’ve found is the Ceramic Tools 1 inch. I thought it worked great (don’t be afraid of the 1 inch, it gets closer to the roots and it curls well at the bottom) and it does not pull your hair out! But mine too stopped working. Its only $40 and I used it a lot over a year’s time so I really feel I got my moneys worth. Its lasted longer than any hair dryer I’ve ever owned!
I'm upgrading...away from this.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's hair gets caught in the cracks of this thing. I thought mine was malfunctioning or something. I haven't had any problems with chipping of the ceramic yet, but it pulls my hair and breaks it like everytime I use it. Therefore I'm about to buy a new one. Who wants their hair to break and pull everytime they use a tool? Certainly not me. It's worth more money to buy a better made product.
