Being 50 myself and liking my gray hair...years ago my grandfather used this daily for years. He ended up having black hair. We tried to get him to back off but like a lady that bleaches her hair...it's hard to go back. We live in a world where people want something without putting any effort in. Get real! Use it like you would brushing your teeth daily...what you don't do that?
Doesn't work

I've used this product for about half a year and concur with all of the above comments, except to say that it gave my normally salt and pepper color a rusty tinge (really normal looking!)
TIRE FIRE

It works ok, but the smell is like tires burning. And I can't imagine the lead in the product being healthy. So, if you hate gray enough to spread lead on your head and smell like a tire fire.....GO FOR IT!

I used this exactly as directed and got excatly the result predicted. Odor leaves with drying of hair and is a minimal issue. If you get too much on the scalp--some being unavoidable--you get a residulal taste in your mouth for a day.

I found the new formula does not work at all. I liked the old one much better. Why did you change it to a new formula?

I have been using this since September. It seems to have worked a little but I have not gotten the rotten egg or old man smell that the others discussed.
Works well! Very Happy!

My white hair is very resistant to coloring. When I use traditional permanant haircolor it usually starts to fade in several days. I've been using this product for about 2 weeks. Following the directions exactly. So far it's turned my white head to a very attractive salt & pepper and taken years off my appearance. There is a odor, but it fades over the course of the day. I'm looking forward to only needing to use it once or twice a week to maintain.
Rotten Egg-Head (not the Batman supervillian, either)

I am another first day user, second day tosser. Sure wish I had found this board on the web before wasting my money. The rotten egg odor is _unbelievably_ bad. You don't notice it so much at first, but the longer it's on, the more pungent it becomes. I now know exactly where some of that "old man smell" I used to notice as a kid was coming from. Run from this product or believe me, the wife/girlfriend will be running from you. J.
No Change after a month

I have used this product daily for a month now and very little to no change. I included 'very little' only because my grandaughtters think it worked a little. But I can tell you it didn't. Wish there was a money back guarantee - I would apply for it. I see I am in the majority opinion too!
It worked, got over the smell

1st time I followed the direction; could not stand the smell of sulfer. So, the next time I used it after a shower, I apply per directions, covered my hair with a plastic bag to prevernt drying for just ONE hour. Then I washed my hair using little shampoo. The color got darker, kept this up, onece-a-week for 3 weeks till I got as dark as I want; a foxy gray. The smell is minimum this way. Good luck
Works as advertised

I'm not sure why the negative reviews. The bottles we buy in NC at the local Target contain Lead Acetate, same ingredient as always. It does smell a bit at first, but once it dries it's not nearly as noticeable. It actually just smells like hairspray. Also, you do get used to it so you don't notice it as much when applying it after awhile (unless, I suppose, you are someone with an extra-sensitive sense of smell).
I have to wash my hair *every* night because I have oily hair. I have no choice. So I can't follow the directions to not wash my hair for a few days or a week. Not only that, I'd rather not wear it during the day at work because it does cause my hair to style a little differently, so I apply it every evening when I get home from work, then wash my hair again in the morning. Only on the weekends do I apply it in the morning.
The coloring process is slower like this, but it DOES still work. You just have to be persistent. It took almost a full bottle originally to see a difference following this method of daily washings and only applying it in the evenings during the week. But now all I have to do is continue with the same process and there is much less grey. (Granted, I don't have a full head of grey hair, but enough that there is a big difference after using the product).
The only downside to the above is that it doesn't eliminate *all* of the grey, just most of it (which is still preferable to me than none at all, or coloring my hair with some 5-minute package that doesn't match). And -- if you tend to cut your hair short and let it grow out several weeks, there is more grey immediately upon having your hair cut where the Grecian Formula hasn't had a chance yet to alter the color of the shorter hair closer to the scalp.
So -- this DOES work, even if you wash your hair on a daily basis, you must just be persistent (esp at first) and keep using it until you no longer notice the smell (which really isn't all that bad IMO -- just strong until dry). Granted, there may be those who just have a sensitive sense of smell who can't get past this characteristic of the solution.
If your situation sounds like mine -- I recommend this product completely.
Works well, smells

Grecian has been a nice little miracle for me after about a week. It does smell, not a horrible smell, but very noticeable. For that reason I use it when not around the family, and just try to let it stay on for 24 hrs if I can before shampooing.
It has already turned the clock back a few years, and the wife is really enjoying it (so I am too!) I plan to just reapply a day or 2 after haircuts.
I don't know anything about a reformulation, as this is the first bottle I ever bought, but am happy it worked. Someone even said the "new" stuff doesn't have lead acetate, but mine does. So maybe I got an old bottle still on the shelf.
Anyway, besides avoiding smelling around people, just make sure you don't get any from your hands or otherwise to your mouth, food, or beverage. It might be a good idea to use plastic gloves to make sure.
I hope they never take it away from me now, because I can control just how much gray I want to allow.
Works great for me.

I apply the product in the evening, shampoo in the morning. So far, after about three weeks, it's worked very well. Gray is gone, and no noticable smell, allergic reactions, or other negative results. I'm very pleased, and I don't understand why it doesn't seem to work as well for others who have reviewed it. I couldn't be happier with the product.

Product will not work if you wash hair during coloring process. Works great on my fine textured hair. Maybe coarse textured hair would be harder to color.

I used this product for about 4 years and now the same product is worthless almost. It is not the same what used to be previously. I also used it for the past 2 years while in Germany and is completely different in quality and results when compare with the product I bought lately in USA. BIG - WHY? A big Lie or what?

The new formula stinks, really bad. The smell gets into my shirt collar, pillows and hats. The product is also very slow to work and just dosent hold up. I can see where people might like it if there is just nothing else they can use. Otherwise, its not worth the trouble.

I have been using the foam version of this product for 3 weeks. My wife constantly complains about the smell and I don't like it either. I also don't like the greasy look to my hair. However, I found that if I blow dry my hair after applying the Grecian Formula, my hair actually looks much better and fuller. My hair has darkened and thickened somewhat, but nowhere close to its original dark brown of my earlier years. I wonder if the liquid or the cream have less smell. The directions say to wash once a week. That simply won't work for me. I get very sweaty every day and must wash my hair daily. Maybe that has caused it to act so slowly. Even if the product does start to work better with time, I can't imagine living with this horrible smell all the time.

I'm surprised by all the negative reviews. I use this product twice per week and get great results. Yes, it does smell bad. I use Grecian Formula at night and shampoo my hair at least twice in the morning to remove the smell. The coloring absolutely does not wash out. Unfortunately, I do have to wash my pillowcases frequently to remove the smell.

Not the same as before, this formula, takes longer to work, washes out quicker, smells stronger, and is just about the only thing on the market that is left for people like me who are allegic to permanent hair dyes.
I want my old Formula back!!!!
