I just received my FHI Heat Platform Special Edition 1" today which the shipping and packaging is very good. Thank you Folica. I am African American with very thick, curly hair. I am natural without a relaxer. So I needed a tool which I can use to make it appear salon beautiful. Prior to this order, I was advised to test the FHI Technique G2 by a sales consultant at Planet Beauty. Immediately I like the shine that I saw on my hair. I rarely use heat protectants when I flat iron my hair. I do tend to use good conditioners and straigtening balm with a heat protection ingredient. I tested the Platform which I feel makes my hair very silky with shine. When I am using this Platform, I feel it glides over my hair at ease without any pressure or effort. Trust me ladies, it doesn't snag your hair. You can get very close to the roots without feeling like you are burning your scalp. You can hold perfectly in your hand without feeling too hot to hold. FHI has designed a high quality hair tool for all hair textures. It has temperature dial to adjust the setting to your hair type. I had mines set between 370-450. Yes ladies, this professional FHI Platform goes up to 450 degrees (140-450).

I am quite pleased with this flat iron. This is the first flat iron that I have to actually smile about as I am using it. It is important when we shop for hair tools that we need to find good quality. I do admit that I wanted to purchase a Runway which I did research on the Platform by reading reviews. A consumer stated that the FHI Platform and Runway are quite similar. For now, I am going to stick with FHI products. If you are looking for quality, FHI products are the best. I also own a Sedu which I really enjoy. However I do find my hair tends to still look frizzy after I've used the wondeful Sedu on my hair even with hair protectant. And the Sedu gets really hot which makes it hard to hold in your hand.

It is really good for African Americans with natural hair as well as relaxed if you are looking for an excellent professional flat iron. This flat iron again will work magic for all textures and ethnicities. ;)I'm sold on FHI.

Con: FHI can easily collect product on the ceramic tourmaline plates as I noticed. I didn't put anything on my hair but I had other products already on my hair prior. Just make sure to keep the plates clean. I too nervous to put any rubbing alcohol on it so I just use a Qtip to clean around the plate. Like any flat iron, you want to keep the ceramic plates clean for care of your product.

Thank you Folica for excellent shipping and customer service.

This iron is the best, it doesn't damage my hair and it also leaves it super straight. I own a sedu flat iron but for some reason when the cord oves it turns off on me, so i saw the reviews on FHI and it seemed to be the one that would work best with my hair type and indeed it does. I love my flat iron but i use good products and heat protectant so that helps.

I have had this flat iron for over a year and I'm just now getting around to writing a review. I had a Sedu before this and after a while of using it, my hair became extremely dry and damaged--despite heat protection. Luckily, it was time for a new one anyway since my Sedu was on its last leg. Initially, I planned on purchasing another Sedu, but decided to try something new. There is a reason why this flat iron is so expensive (although I found mine elsewhere for less). It is the best. Forget the CHI, GHD, Sedu, Solia, or whatever it is you're using to straighten your hair--especially if you have highly textured hair that has not been chemically altered with a perm. My hair is 3c/4a, is very coarse, and thick and I use this at 370-400 degrees. It gets my hair straight in 2 passes. I use a rattail comb to guide the iron and my hair stays fantastic until I wash day if I wrap it up at night. When my hair grows out I will get the 1 1/4, but this iron is the way to go. I've tried a CHI and even with my hair already semi straight, it still did nothing. I've let several of my hair connoisseur and stylists friends test this iron out and they are amazed every time. Try it, you really won't regret it.

My concern is how long it takes to get it done. After I blow dry my hair it takes me about 15 minutes. This flat iron is light weight and easy to use. It does heat up fast and even without product it does it's job. My hair is pretty thick and it does work! I'd love the ghd I'm just not sure I could spend that much money for it.

Product Rating: 5 A Great Iron!!
Reviewer: Tess from springfield, va USA  Fri Oct 09 2009

I'm writing in response to some of the reviews I have read. One reviewer mentioned that this iron does not work in humidity while her prior iron which fried her hair kept her hair straight. The iron that fried your hair thermally reconstructed your hair so that your curl pattern was permanently changed. The FHI Platform is a 1000x better iron which will not fry your hair thus not ruin your curl pattern. It uses tourmaline and far-infrared heat to straighten your hair from the inside while other irons just slowly burn your hair straight. Also others are saying it is too delicate for the price. Again, you are dealing with a professional iron that is not meant to be dropped! Buy yourself an iron stand so that you don't drop it as it rests on your counter or do your hair seated in front of a long mirror. If you purchase your FHI iron from a licensed distributor, it comes with a warranty so you can replace it if something happens. FHI has always been kind and helpful anytime one of my appliances got damaged and gave me a full replacement on both my 2000 nano pro dryer and my platform iron. This is a professional tool people hence the steep price! it is actually meant for stylists! If you treat it well it will be well to you! If your hair is straight then you don't need to spend $200 on this iron. you can buy cheaper ceramic and tourmaline irons. This is a top of the line iron that means serious business. I've recommended this iron to so many stylists and non-stylists who need this type of heat from an iron. It works miracles on my West African 4b hair.

Product Rating: 1 Overpriced not as good as CHI
Reviewer: Bella   Sat Oct 03 2009

I was so excited to have the FHI I was told the CHI was not as good and I would be surprised by how much better FHI was. I have a relaxer and I blow my hair out. The FHI was such a disappointment it curled the hair well but did not straighten it; the CHI always straightened my hair so well that people always think I wear a wig and want to see if my hair is a weave this FHI did not smooth my hair and did nothing for me-it just looked as if I went through it with a traditional hot comb. Needless to say I returned the FHI and exchanged it for my low priced tried and true CHI.

Product Rating: 3 Performance depends on geography!
Reviewer: Styna from Montreal, QC  Sun Jun 28 2009

This straightener gives you VERY nice, healthy hair. Before this, I owned 2 Conairs and I hadn't noticed until I purchased the FHI Platform that I was actually frying my hair all this time. My hair used to, admittedly, look stiff but when I use the FHI, it looks like I naturally have straight hair. I have mixed European/North African hair... it's 'European' but with tight curls. I just blowdry straight and then run the straightener over each section once, twice max, and I am good to go. I have very little split ends with the FHI and I don't use a very good heat protectant...

HOWEVER, this straightener does NOT work in humidity. When I first bought this, I lived in the Canadian Prairies, which were dry for the most part. When it rained or was humid (which wasn't very often), my hair would curl. I also noticed that with the Conair, I'd wake up with [still] straight hair, and with the FHI, I'd wake up with curly, bent hair.

I moved to Montreal last year which is very humid and rainy and my hair ALWAYS would curl up or get flips at the ends. In extreme humidity it would be frizzy within 10 minutes.

There are structural problems with this straightener. One of the plates loosened (like a previous reviewer mentioned). It's being held in place by a wire. It still works, but can get annoying. This happened to my hair stylist too and it almost burned me. I think for so much money, your hair should not curl, and your plates shouldn't fall out!

If you live in a dry climate and will never drop your straightener, I really recommend the FHI Platform. I bought mine in September 2007 and other than the plate, it's still going strong. If you live anywhere humid, like BC, WA, GA, LA, TN, etc... it's just not worth it. I heard the Solia and Sedu can hold your hairstyle, so I am going to try this next... I am moving to Vancouver (where it 'always' rains) and I can't risk having poofy hair everytime I leave the house!

Product Rating: 1 So DISAPPOINTED!
Reviewer: Leah Nappi from Long Beach, CA  Tue Jun 16 2009

I spent $200 on this flat iron thinking, the more money it cost, the better it is for your hair. Was I wrong. I am so disappointed in the iron that I keep going back to my old one. It's too late to return it for a different brand. I just thought if would work better on my hair and it doesn't. If you have thick hair, don't bother buying this iron.

Product Rating: 3 mine broke in a couple of weeks!
Reviewer: Disappointed from co  Sat May 02 2009

Of course, this iron worked well when I first bought it. It straightened my hair very well and left it shiny and smooth. I was wary about buying it because i read reviews about how it would break very easily. I thought to myself, oh i'll take care of it well. Well, it broke after i dropped it once. luckily, i bought it a couple of weeks before i broke it so i could get a full refund from the store. If you do end up buying it you MUST take extra precautions

Product Rating: 2 Significant design issues..
Reviewer: Steve from Atlanta, GA  Thu Apr 30 2009

In general I like the FHI flat iron but there are some serious design issues that you should consider when buying one. The most significant thing (that I've noticed) is the very bad swivel cord design. This is an extremely cheap design and the cord *will* eventually fall out of the swivel. How much use you'll get out of the iron before that point seems to vary. I would prefer to see the iron built without the swivel "feature" so that the cord attachment is more durable (untangling or untwisting a cord periodically is a small price to pay for a more reliable iron). The other design issue is that the ceramic heater plates are held into the iron with very cheap plastic clips. If the iron is dropped or used at high temperature for extended periods of time (e.g. straighteners) then the clips will crack and the heater plates will come loose. This could have been fixed with the use of metal clips but even their runway ($400!!) iron still uses the cheap plastic clip design.

A warranty would usually cover such failures but FHI's warranty specifies (other than purchasing directly from them at very high prices) "OTHER SELECT AUTHORIZED BEAUTY PRODUCTS RESELLER" which is *very* ambiguous and seems to give them a good reason not to honor the warranty when you purchase from online retailers (perhaps they aren't in the loop with regard to the 21st century and online shopping?).

Reviewer: someone from TN from TN  Thu Apr 23 2009

I have used these straightners, and I must say they are one of the best. I am transitioning from relaxed to natural and this flat iron gets my hair very straight. It leaves my hair soft and it feels healthy. It will not leave your hair dry like some of the other straightners that I have used.

Product Rating: 5 LOVE IT!!!!
Reviewer: Sherry G from High Point, NC  Sat Mar 07 2009

I simply love this flat iron. Like any other tool that is new you have to experiment until you get it right. It glides through my hair easily. I have used sexy straight balm with goldwell highlight protectant and it stopped the breakage. I also use It's a 10 miracle hair mask once a week which will cut down on drying your hair out. Just remember what you take out must be put back. I have used all kinds of flat irons and the FHI platform seems to be the best by far.

I got this iron (1 3/4") from a much cheaper source as I was not willing to spend $195 on it. I am glad I did, as I don't think it's worth that much, but it is definitely a good iron. I bought it to replace my Sedu (after 2 years the plates are starting to fall off), so I had pretty high expectations. The FHI does have more of a tendency to snag/pull hair than the Sedu (which never once pulled my hair, but my hair is softer and shinier after using the FHI than it has ever been with the Sedu. If I could combine the FHI and the Sedu I think I would have found my perfect iron.

My salon uses this flatiron. I have always used the Chi but decided to give it a try. It worked great for the 1st year. Conventiently 1 week after the year warranty ran out it broke. The heating plate on one side just falls out and hangs by the wires. It's really hard/impossible to use. They wont replace it but offered a refurbished flatiron that I could buy for not much less than a new one. I wouldn't think this was such a big deal if the exact same situation hadn't happened at my Salon where the girl who cuts my hair had the plate fall out on her also. Not good and I will def go back to my CHI which I have had for years and still works!

Reviewer: Crystal from Charlotte  Fri Feb 06 2009

This straightener is great when it works, but I had mine for less than six months and the plates began to fall out. I called FHI and they stated that the company I bought it from (either Ebay or Amazon, brand new) was not an authorized retailer and that they would not fix it, despite the fact that I still had all of my receipts and the warranty information. I tried to glue the plate back in and within another month the other one began to fall out. This is very frustrating when the product is over $100.

Product Rating: 1 Badly pulls and snags hair
Reviewer: Pink   Thu Dec 25 2008

I recently purchased the 1 1/4" FHI Heat Platform hoping that for a good price I would get the results that they advertize. I was hugely disappointed. The first reason is that it is heavy and cumbersome and its hard to wield it and hold it. The main reason for its poor performance is that it pulls the hair and rips and snags it like a cheap flat iron. You can actually hear the hair being ripped, it was an awful experience, I almost cried, having spent so much money and having read many good reviews about it, it was all so convincing. I don't have especially fine hair that gets pulled and snagged and breaks, I have medium thickness hair, and quite straight, but I just wanted the sleek silky look (I have a chin length bob, and I wanted the "Asian" effect...). Also it didnt really straighten my hair making it sleeker, it kept the poufiness and volume which I didnt want, no matter how many glides I went through - it didn't make it sleek and ripped and broke my hair. Its horrible.

Product Rating: 5 Best Flat Iron!
Reviewer: Nikka from California  Sat Nov 08 2008

Thisis by far the best flat iron ever. I used a CHI for 3 years. It did a good job. I bought the FHI 1 3/4 in. Platform Ceramic Tourmaline with Nano Fuzeion....and it is incredible. I have thick coarse black hair to my waist, and it looks silky, shiny, and it is soft. The iron is lightweight, and the controls are located so you do not keep bumping into it like the CHI. Your hand does not get tired. The wide plates cut straightening my hair in half the time.

Product Rating: 5 Can't Get Much Better Than This!
Reviewer: anonymous from Maryland  Thu Jul 17 2008

I am African-American with relaxed hair. After using the FHI my hair is silkier, shinier, softer, smoother and has more body. FHI locks in so much moisture that my hair looks a shade darker. I even use it on my damp hair with unbelievable results. I use it at 370 degrees. Make sure you play with the temperature settings to find the best one for you. I have owned Solia and Hai digistick flat irons. They didn't come close to giving my these kind of results. They say FHI is the trade's best kept secret. It won't be for long.
