I havn't used the Paul Mitchell, but this one works great. I have thick, really frizzy and kinky hair too and i love this iron. It straightens really well and so far i've never had to go over my hair more than once.

What is a good heat to use?
I have been told that 200 degrees is the average that a hair stylist would use, this seems very high. Help?

It depends on your ethnicity and the coarseness/thickness of your hair. As an African American female I wash my hair 1X per week. I use the highest heat setting 450 after freshly washed hair, and 200 for any touchup's throughout the week.

it all depends on how thick or frizzy your hair is. I've had it on the highest setting and it's never taken my hair out, but then again i don't have to use it everyday except maybe to touchup my edges

If you didn't use a heat protectant, then your hair could become fried because nothing is covering it to protect against the scorching heat. In effect, Your hair could break off and become very damaged. This would then cause it to look dull and broken. My advice, Use a light styler that does not weigh your hair down.

curling hair with fhi flat iron
how do you curl with the flat iron

All you have to do is flick your wrist on the spot you want curled... except it wont really be curled. It will mostly be flipped out. But if you flip your hair underneath with the iron then it will look a little curled. The Fhi iron isnt really made for curling but you can still do it.
