Yes, you are burning your hair. You should either turn your iron down or use a deep conditioner to help minimize damage. I burned my hair using an iron and it is still fried and feels gross, so I dont recommend risking it!

flickering lights
I received my 5/8" ceramic tools curling iron. Are the red and green lights (on and off lights) supposed to flicker on and off? When the iron is sitting still, the lights stay mostly solid, but when I pick up the unit to use it, the lights start flickering back and forth between red and green. Then when I put the unit down, they sometimes continue to flicker before they go back to a solid green.

HEAT
Does anyone else have problems with the iron staying hot?? When I turn it on, it heats up quick, but then shuts off after a minute or two. I keep having to push the on button in order for it to stay hot. Otherwise, the irons cools down & does not curl my hais. Any suggestions?

I have the same exact problem! I came online to see if thats the way this curling iron worked or if it is broken. The instructions are useless. The indicator light just blinks alternating between the "off" and "on" till it heats up, then just lands on off. What is the purpose of this?

I guess it would depend on the size of curls you wanted. But, since your hair is fine, it might be a bit harder for the curls to remain curly.. so I would probably reccomend a smaller barrel, 1 inch max.
