Take the time to do it right- it will last longer! submitted by: Christie, Wed May 31 2006

I am a hairstylist, and was introduced to CHI irons in cosmetology school. I will not use any other kind of straightener- they are the best out of all the irons I have tried, but you have to know how to use it! 1. be sure to condition your hair well after shampooing. unless your hair is very dry/damaged, try to apply conditioner only from the middle to the ends of hair. conditioner at the roots will weigh hair down. Shampoo twice to make it extra-clean, and it can last you a few days. 2. apply an anti-frizz serum (not too much) or smoothing cream to damp hair. my favorite is Sleek Look by Matrix. 3. BLOW DRY YOUR HAIR! Especially if it is naturally course and curly. If your hair is naturally smooth and you just want to get rid of some waves, then air-drying is fine, but flat irons are finishing tools. If you are using it on air-dried course or curly hair, you will have to go over the strand more, and this is where the damage comes from. start the straightening process by blow-drying with a brush that creates tension, such as a round brush. 4. flat-iron the hair in sections, starting at the neckline. (1/4 to 1/2 in. sections for coarse or curly hair, 1/2 to 1 in. sections for smoother, wavy hair.) if you don't want the pin-straight look, use the iron to slightly flip the ends either up or under. this gives a softer, more natural look. CHI is perfect for this becaue of it's rounded edges. 5. finish with a smoothing product such as Redken Outshine, or Vinyl Glam. (if you think it needs it.) don't use too much product! Trust me! I have clients who come in ONCE a week to have this done, and it will last them the entire week.
Tips from a CHI user... submitted by: Charla Howard, Sat Jul 30 2005

I have been a CHI user for over two years. I could not go a day without it. However, like other users have said it works SO well that it can easily fry your hair. I would first recommend that those of us who have dry hair, do not wash your hair everyday!!! Some people think that sounds gross but it takes the moisture out of your hair. Second I suggest you use some kind of heat protector when you use the CHI. I use Redken's Spray Starch. It is just like ironing clothes and using starch to hold the creases. It kinda steams as the iron hits it but don't worry your hair is not frying! Also, I have naturally curly hair and it reacts horribly to humidity but I still do not use the CHI everyday. Usually after washing, drying and styling my hair will stay straight for a couple days. And another thing I find beneficial is to not use the CHI everytime I fix my hair. Not everyone has the option but I wear my hair curly periodically to give my hair a little break from the blow dryer and CHI. I also color my hair and have no problems with breakage (other than normal wear and tear that a non-chi user would have). If you are gentle with your hair while using your CHI your hair will thank you and you will still receive those rave reviews.

Use A Comb Before the Iron submitted by: Stacy, Thu Mar 31 2005

When using your CHI, take a rattail comb to your roots and slowly work your way down the hair shaft with the iron close behind. I know that the manufacturers of CHI tell you to run the comb after but my stylist runs is before to comb out any of the snags while the CHI glides down my hair.

Use a protective spray submitted by: Diana, Fri Nov 19 2004

If you are using a flat iron, you should run it by your strands quickly and not slowly. with cheaper ones you usually run it by slowly because they are not as powerful, but with the chi you want to run it by quickly and use a protective spray.
