I am African American with thick shoulder lenght hair. I do not have course hair though. I love my Chi flat iron I have purchased so many others and had to return it. I do relax my hair sometimes but no other flat iron makes my hair so soft and silky. If you have to money invest in one if you want you hair to look and feel shiney.
i know there's a better one out there...

i have been using the CHI original 1" flat iron for about 5 years. I have been faithful and everytime it breaks I keep going back and getting another one of the same irons. The last straw for me was when I was on a business trip last week and as soon as I plugged my CHI into the outlet in the hotel's bathroon it sparked and a small flame almost hit my face. To be so far away from home and have no means of straightening my hair was terrible. I had to borrow a co-workers iron that costed her about $20.00 two years ago. Mine was $120.00 and lasted only about 1 year. Sorry CHI, It's OVER!!! I'm moving on to the Sedu....

for those of you with problems with your chi turning off or "breaking", its probably because you're not taking care of it properly!
I've had my chi for 2 years and its still in perfect condition. I never wrap my cord and I unplug it regularly so there aren't any eletrical shortages. I've never had any issues with it "turning off" during straightening unless I accidenally turned it myself. I've traveled with it, its been dropped on the ground & flown across the country, but it still gets my hair stick straight. If you're having problems with frizzing, its probably the PRODUCT you're using on your hair, NOT your CHI! Try Kenra Aquage silkening mists.
All in all, my CHI works as well as GHD (which I also have at home) or Sedu!
I know this sounds dorky, but...It changed my life!

Before I ever used the Chi, I had a bunch of cheap irons such as a hand-me-down from a friend, that was of the Hot Tools brand. Sure, Hot Tools brand did a good job of straightening my hair, but for about five minutes! The humidity would get to my hair minutes before I even stepped out the door! But then one night when I was going to a wedding with my aunt, not only did the Chi make my hair pin straight, shiny, and gorgeous, it lasted on a rainy day, something my straightener at home could only dream of doing! I am in complete love with the Chi straightener, because it has done the impossible: it has tamed my head of tiny spiral curls! I can not wait until I get one for my birthday next month, because if I don't get one I will die a person with terrible, untamable hair. Thank God for the Chi hair straightener!!!
best!!!!

I had a pink chi i got last feb. for my birthday. It worked fine until seven or eight months. then it just totally stopped working. it shorted out or something. so i exchanged it and i got the regular black one...it finally broke on me just now. it again shorted out and i only had it for maybe 5 or 4 months. it makes your hair straight however it kills your hair because you cant set the heat and it gets too hot. I dont reccomend it for anyone.

WEll at first i was hesataint about the CHI beacuse of all the controversy over the CHI and the power issue, but i have used my friends on my super curly and course hair and it turned my hair into a silky straight wonder. SO i came on folica.com to see which straightner is best and i narroed it down to a Sedu and a CHI, and at first my attention was focus on the sedu. But i knew that thr CHI would make my hair as wonderful as before, so i purchased the CHI. and... well i love my CHI it used to take me 2hrs to make my hair pin straight and the CHI cut that in half and also with CHI infra shampoo and thrmal treatment along with the CHI silk infusion my hair is pin straight and stays that way i love CHI and will continue to use their products

The Chi is an amazing straightener,WHEN IT WORKS! I have gone through 2 Chi Straighteners in the past 2 years. Each one has stopped working! When they are working it is by far the best straightener I have ever used... but beware that for $150 straightener they only have about a years worth of life!
BEST FLAT IRON EVER!

Okay, so this is the best CHI I've ever used!! And trust me, I know a LOT about flat irons and all that hair stuff. I've have many chi's in the past, but I have to say the original is much better than any of the other chi's. While they still worked well, they sometimes sparked/didn't heat up/smelled. My first chi, original, hadn't done that. So just to test it out I bought the original again and have had it for a REALLY long time still with no problems. THe problem some people is having is that there's doesn't last long. This is b/c your not taking proper care of it. Don't wrap the cord, keep it in the heat-resistant pouch, and BE CAREFUL!!!! If you think that this is just too much work to deal with, your just being plain lazy. :) No offense but it takes no time or effort.
I've had the best luck with the chi brand, but the original was my favorite. And yes, I've had a Sedu and Solia and I still say chi rocks. I currently have 4 chi's and they are all still working and I've had them all at least 3 years. :):)

I have not purchased a CHI, but I have used my friends straighners. The CHI amazed me, st first. I couldn't beleive how straight my hair was, it was the first time it went that straight, without having to go to a salon. At the time I was using a Conair straightner so of course I was shocked. After a while I realized that altough my hair was straight it didn't stay straight for a long time, and if I ever walked outside into the humidity, my hair would get just as frizzy as it would using my conair. My hair is really curly, so during heat, steam, or humidity it tries very hard to return to normal. Also, I've heard that the CHI isn't that durable and you have to replace it constantly. The heat damages your hair to. I also don't like the fact that you can't change the temperature settings. I like the CHI but it doesn't completely work for me.
