so i was thinking of buying a chi, but im moving to australia in a few months, and i know it says only works in canada and us, so , excuse me for sounding silly, but that means i cant plug in the little adapter and stick it in the wall. ps. im a hairstylist and need a flat iron asap, otherwise i would just wait. i use the Chi in Singapore, which is 220v. I use a converter with it, and it works fine! Just make sure your converter power (in watts) is higher than your Chi power. My Chi is 30W, so I'm using a 70W converter. | | Reply by sarah

agreed. it will definitely not work in europe. I experienced the same as the other person who responded. mine started smoking within about 3 seconds, and that was before I even turned it on. This happened with an expensive converter and adapter. | | Reply by Stacey

I went to Scotland and the minute I got there, I went to use my chi on my friends hair (with a coverter, of course) and my CHI started smoking, the plates caved in, and his hair literally melted off (no joke!)I wouldnt advise using a CHI that you bought in America oversees! | | Reply by Nashaiy

I went to London and used my sister's chi with an adapter and a converter and the plates melted off. (I am from Canada). I am now in Norway for the summer and brought my chi straightener but read the reviews by all the ppl and am not going to use it. I tried it for a few minutes on my bangs and it smelled as if it was melting. I would not recommend using it overseas. | | Reply by sarah h.

if you are going to try and use it where the voltage is higher, you need to make sure you have a converter that goes above at least 500W. Yes, the wattage of a hair straightener says it's 35W but that is only AFTER it has heated up. This is the problem with irons/heating items in general and why you are not really supposed to use converters with them. They actually use more wattage to initially heat up than the manufacturers tell you. I used a converter that switches between 50W-2000W because it was good for hairdryers and my straightener worked fine. | Soila vs Chi
I have the Chi turbo. It is 20 watts and Solia is supposedly 75 watts. My hair looks so dry. Will the Solia help with the dry look? It also takes me so long with the Chi. It takes several times to get it straight. Then it looks dry! I do use protection sprays. Question posted by Carol Tue Sep 11 2007 Submit your answer | Reply by [[SoFy]]

if you want to have a beautiful hair
you have to not only use straightner and thats it
okay my hair will look awful with all straighteners
but this is wat i do and my hair its tottaly awesome now!
=use head and shoulders, smooth and silky
=leave the conditoiner for about 5 minutes
=the you wash it off with cold water
=then when your hair is damp apply some tresseme heat protector
=when its dry straighten by sections
and now it takes me like 30-45min.[[it use to take me like 2hrs,30minutes!]] | International use
I am scheduled to travel to multiple countries in Europe next week. Can I use my Chi flat iron safely with an international electrical converter. Someone else told me that it would harm the flat iron. Question posted by Connie Weber Mon Sep 10 2007 Submit your answer | Reply by India

DO NOT USE THE CHI IN A CONVERTER IN EUROPE!!!
I TRIED IT, AND THE IRON MELTED FROM THE PLATES WHILE I WAS STRAIGHTENING MY HAIR. MY HAIR WAS BURNT BADLY AND I HAD TO CUT A GREAT DEAL OFF. IT IS STILL IN THE REPAIRING STAGE AND I WISH THAT I WOULD HAVE NEVER EVER TRIED TO FLAT IRON MY HAIR. I WOULD HAVE RATHER RUN AROUND GERMANY AND FRANCE LOOKING A HOT-NAPPY-MESS! | | Reply by Diana B.

I just went to Europe in Sept. (Italy, France, & Spain). The guy at the luggage store where I bought my electrical converters strongly advised against using my Chi flat iron in Europe (even with the converters) b/c he had been told by many women that their flat irons got too hot, overheated, and then didn't work anymore. I didn't want to risk it with my Chi since it was so expensive so I ordered a flat iron with a European plug (only has 2 round prongs). It's called Sedu Ionic Ceramic Pro Flat Iron. It worked awesome! Seemed to take even less time and do a better job than my Chi, leaving my hair soft and shiny. I would totally recommend it, especially if you plan on traveling to other places in the future. I ordered it 2 days before my trip, requested next day mail, and got it on time. | | Reply by GGS

Just want to chime in for future US readers. My Chi flat iron melted and was ruined when I used it with an adaptor in Italy. I had forgotten I needed a VOLTAGE CONVERTER. Researching this now for another tript to Italy. The high power voltage converter that I'd feel safe using on my upcoming trip with my new Chi costs $45. US! Less expensive voltage converters (still in $30. range)that are for "heating appliances" still warn you not to use them for more than 30 minutes. I'm not going to risk my new Chi and spend so much $ on a voltage converter. I'm purchasing inexpensive dual voltage appliances: maybe a flat iron & definitely a travel hair dryer for my upcoming trip. With the heat and all the outdoor walking you do as a tourist in the summer in Europe, the curl and the frizz is going to happen anyway. | temp control?
does the CHI have a temperature control knob/button? if not, how hot does it get, exactly? i don't wanna completely fry my hair! Question posted by dancerXOt Fri Aug 24 2007 Submit your answer | Reply by customer service

it doesnt have a temperature control dial. i dont know how hot it gets | Solia, Sedu, or Chi?
Okay, so I have spent quite some time researching the Chi, Sedu, and Solia, and I'm still having trouble deciding which flat iron is the best. I've read great reviews and seen amazing pictures for all three straighteners, but I just can't decide which one to choose! I would prefer a flat iron that works best on slightly frizzy Asian hair, and causes the least amount of damage. Quite a percentage of the Chi reviews stated that the Chi breaks shortly after a year or even less. The Sedu costs $30 more than the Solia, and I wanted to know if it's really worth that thirty bucks. I think the Chi and Sedu might be bigger brand names, but the features it offers is about the same as the Solia. Please tell me which one is better and whether they're worth their price. Thanks! I used to work at a Salon as a Massage therapist and on my free time and I used to watch the hairstylist. Get a section of your hair and clamp then turn the chi your hair should hang down, not hang on the on the oppisite side by your scalp . Then just go all the way down to the end, as if you were flat ironing it and it should curl. | the light on straightener
I recently bought a chi straightener and I was wondering if the red light is suppose to blink rapidly? Question posted by Sena Fri Jul 20 2007 Submit your answer | Reply by Em

The light flashing means your straightener is heating up. When it's rapidly blinking it's HOT and ready to use. | | Reply by Niki

Yeah, it is. It means that is hot enough to straighten, curl, flip, or anyother desired style. But be careful, don't burn yourself! | | Reply by jaz

well i've never had this problem, but my only suggestion (if you haven't figured it out) is just to unplug the striaghtener when you don't want to use it. if it's on when it's not plugged in it doesn't matter | | Reply by Brenda

I bought the pink chi for my girls for christmas 2 years ago from a salon and before it was a year old the switch got stuck to "on" position and I was able to return it and get a new one because of the one year warranty. Now, this iron has the exact same problem and its a week over a year old!! I called the manufacturer and they said they have never heard of this happening, but this is the 2nd iron to do this! Now one of my daughters wants the original black one for christmas this year, because she says her friends' gets hotter than our pink one. I'm afraid with daily use it would damage her hair and the thing will break again!! They are so expensive. I just don't know what to do! | hi my chi was working fine yesterday and it just suddenly stopped we didnt do any thing to it and it never moved why is this so and how can i fix it
