more than likely you have product build up on the iron. Try a chemical relaxer (for ethnic hair) and rub some on the iron with a towel when the iron is hot. It will burn off any hair product...this is a messy procedure but it works on any iron with product build up.... hopefully that is the only problem you have... | | Reply by Danielle

my daughters have a chi and i have had the same problem it shorts out and the on-off switch is loose i as a parent am dissatisfied $100.00 is a lot of money you would expect it to last longer. I have hot rollers from my teen years and they still work. | | Reply by Gayle

I had a CHI for 5 years until it gave out (electrical). I too debated over a Solia, and ended up going with that. I have had it about 6 months, and if it is not humid or raining, you have a good chance your hair will remain straight. The temp on the Solia can be turned up to 450, so I bumped it up from 370 (what I should have stayed at)thinking the increased temp would make it stay straight. What I have noticed is my hair looks more dry and dull, even with the use of thermal products. So, today I took the plunge again (another $85)even though my Solia is working fine, and bought another CHI. One difference may be, and I am not an expert, is the tourmaline+ceramic (Solia) VS. ceramic only plates (CHI). Not sure if that has something to do with the hair curling up-I will let you know how my hair reacts with the new CHI. | | Reply by Tiffany

the biggest reasons to get a solia instead of a chi:
-tourmaline! it emits negative ions that close down the outer cuticle layer of your hair, creating smoothness, shine, and HUMIDITY RESISTANCE!! (that's most important to me, since i live in texas.)
-adjustable temperature. the solia not only gets hotter than a chi, but you can turn the temp down if you have thinner or fragile hair. mine is super bleached, so i use mine on about 290.
just a professional hairdresser's input! | Chi or Sedu?
Ok so my friend has the chi and I love it! But I heard that they tend to not work after a couple months or a year. I need to get something that will last long and will be worth my money. For the chi I've heard that the black one is the best because it straightens the fastest and also lasts longer. This is a tough decision for me. I haven't heard anything bad about the Sedu so I'm still trying to decide. Please help!I also have semi-thick hair and share a bathroom with my sister so I cannot take a long time. Lol. I have had my Chi for a year and it already quit working. The indicator light won't stay on unless I push on the cermaic plate, which I can't do because it heats up so fast! My hairstylist said another girl she works with had the same problem as I did with her Chi. I loved my Chi but I don't know if I want to take the chance on getting another one. | | Reply by Maira

I've had my Chi for a few years now and have had no problems whatsoever. these other people must not take care of their things. I always leave mine in the on postion and just unplug it when I'm not using it. So no problem with it not turning on. It only takes a few minutes to straighten your hair with it, it's amazing and I would buy another one in a second!!! | Help.!

I personally do not have a CHI flat iron. But I do have my hair "done" every two weeks. My hairdresser uses the CHI flat iron and it does wonders on my hair. I've been going to her for the past two year?, and I think shes been using the product for a couple of months. Because I have super thick ,coarse hair (as most black people like to put it, I have that good hair, LOL). It works so well, but I do not have the money to spend on one item. (Im a freshmen at college, a penny saved is a penny earned!!!)It has its pros and cons. Pros: most reviewers said its professionally styling right in your hands, breaking minimium, straigthens wonderfully, etc. Cons: on a lot of these reviews most people said it burns out by the end of one year or quicker and it does no have an temperature adjustement.
IT REALLY DOES WORKS. If only it was a tid-bit cheaper and if I knew how long the product will last. | | Reply by Tyra

I am currently using a flat iron that maxes out at 420 deg F and I'm black or African American... whatever your liking. It works well but I cannot drop too low on the temp or it will be just like pressing it. My flat irons give me longer periods in between hair styles and ceramic plates are better than the metal ones. The metal ones burn my hair often. When looking for good flat irons, when you're black, your focus should be on the plates (ceramic/tourmaline) and the temperature (depending on the thickness of your hair). Never buy a flat iron without adjustable temperature. That's not for us.
One thing for sure is, regardless of the flat iron, if your hair is not healthy and manageable no flat iron will work. You must condition (rinse well in lukewarm water not hot or cold), moisturize (not a heavy grandmaw grease) with a light oil or lotion (maybe Phyto 9), and keep it trim from split ends. Most importantly I noticed the greatest change in my hair when I slept, ate healthy proteins, drank my waters and worked out. If you don't believe the exercising part take note that Rogaine was discovered as a side effect of blood-pressure lowering medications. Read the package in the store. :) | How do I get my reset button to work ?
I can't get the iron to come on even though i pushed the rest buton what do I do? Question posted by Heather Tue Nov 20 2007 Submit your answer | Reply by Shannon

It's broken. I have the same problem and returned it already. | CHI smells funny
My daughter has a CHI and lately it smells really funny when she turns it on. Is there something you can clean the CHI with, a special kind of product? Question posted by Melissa Mon Nov 19 2007 Submit your answer | Reply by Sam

My Chi has the same "odor" at times, usually from hair product residue collected on the iron. When the iron is cold, it can be scraped off and cleaned with a tissue without product. Once or twice I have used small amounts of alcohol on just the plates of the iron to clean it, then left the iron off for about a week to make sure everything has evaporated. I'm not sure I'd SUGGEST this method of cleaning, because the iron gets HOT and it could be dangerous, but I have done this with success (and care) in the past. | Sedu or Solia?
Seems that when the question is posed as to which product is the best choice the Sedu vs Solia, the answer usually comes from Sedu and what do you think they say??? I'd like to hear from some of you(not the companies)that have actually used both flat irons. I'm having a really hard time choosing between the two brands. I have fine, slightly wavy hair that is between chin and shoulder length. I blow it dry but can never seem to get it completely straight, it turns under at the bottom. Humid days are my worst enemy, my hair frizzes and poofs. I need a good flat iron. Also, should I choose a 1" or a 1-1/4"? Help!!!
