I always use gloves to apply self-tanner, especially with spray-on kinds that dry really quickly. tan on your palms is the worst - even if you're nicely tan everywhere, it looks fake if you've got some on your palms.
At least 3 hours before self-tanning: Exfoliate! I use a face towel in the shower to scrub off my old previous tan.
Before bed: Spray a light coat of this stuff everywhere except your hands and feet. Put some moisturizer on a face towel and wipe the excess tanning off your elbows and knees.
Mix 1/2 parts moisturizer and 1/2 spray and use this for your face, hands and feet. The reason for this is: using the spray alone on your face clogs your pores and sometimes spotting occurs. Your face is suppose to be a little lighter than your body anyway - this way it looks more natural.
Spray tanners also tans darker and faster on your hands and feet, so the moisturizers slows the absorption making it look more even with the rest of your body.
Let everything dry for at least 10 minutes. Go to sleep. Don't worry about the color getting onto your sheets. they wash off in the laundry. In the morning, take a shower and apply body moisturizer / lotion with spf in it everyday to keep it from fading. If you want to go darker, just spray before bed. wash out in the morning. exfoliate only once a week.
Voila, the perfect tan.
