I am pretty bummed I have to say. This was highly recommended and I feel a little sad. My scalp is hot and my bangs (the only place with gray) are totally black even though I used dark brown. Now my bangs are black and my hair is brown. I wasn’t going for two toned. :( On the flip side the texture is nice.

about a year ago i started losing hair in patches, the doctors couldnt figure out why, and I had to get shots in my head that didnt work anyway. After a while I figured out that using harsh hair color was making my hair come out. Everytime I covered my gray there would be another huge patch gone. So I would go months without coloring my hair, and what a mess, but eventually I would have to color again and yep out with another patch.. Well I started looking for something to color with that didnt have harsh chemicals. I found the Bigen and bought it. I waited until my roots were grossly long because I was so nervous about coloring my hair again. I did a patch test on the side of my head and waited a few days, it worked great. So I colored all my roots. Ive only used it once but no hair has fallen out and I love the color, even in the places where I am missing hair there are little baby hairs growing back now. I know everyone is different and some people react to things differently than others, but if you are having the same problem I have been having, give this product a try. I really like it so far and will continue to use it. I just am not ready to go gray yet and I think this product is going to be my answer. I am about 80% gray but with Bigen I am 100% chocolate brown.. Im crossing my fingures and hoping that I get the same results everytime I use this..

Product Rating: 5 Amazing

A friend recommended this product, and my mom bought a bottle of it from Trinidad, I love it. I've used hair dyes before that contained bleach, they it damaged my hair BADLY. With the other dye, any part that was colored fell out after a week. I've had Bigen in my hair for a week, and so far, its amazing. My hairs texture hasnt changed, it doesnt smell chemcially, and my hair still looks so healthy. (I used Oriental Black).
if I could give it more stars I would!!! ***************

I am African-American and I used to use Bigen years ago to dye my hair oriental black for the fun of it. It worked very well but eventually I decided to let it grow out.

Fast forward over 10 years later and I'm starting to go gray. I asked my sister who is a stylist what is a good brand for covering grays, as I often see so many people color their grays and the color doesn't take. She told me to start using Bigen again and boy was she right! It covered my gray hair like nobody's business.

I used brown-black as my own hair is brown and I didn't want it Oriental Black. However it looked Oriental Black anyway, but the grays were totally covered!

For African-Americans: when you first use this dye, it will leave your hair with a strange texture. But it will soften up and return to normal after a couple of washes. I recommend using very good moisturizing shampoos and conditioners if you are going to use Bigen.

Perhaps it varies for each person but for me, the dark color softened after a few washes and now it's brown when the light hits it. My grays are still covered and the dark color is very natural-looking.

So far I've found that the best shampoo and conditioner to use on black hair after putting in Bigen is Creme of Nature Ultra-Moisturizing Shampoo and their moisturizing conditioners.

If you have African hair texture and want to cover your grays, Bigen works like a charm!

I've been using this product on a few of my clients for the past year and everything seemed to be fine, since last week one of my client (also a friend) got the worst allergic reaction ever though we've been using it (oriental black #59) on her head (and weave) for the past 6 mounths! Her face got 3 times bigger and she looked like somebody burnt her face, ears, neck and scalp and she was basicaly leaking puse, she's still at the hospital today, getting better everyday thank God. I'm not trying to diss this product or anything but please i'm just sharing this so you can be aware, Yes it's a good hair dye, and it has done wonders on hair but Keep in mind that you could end up in a hospital bed in pain for several days just because you changed your hair color. Keep also in mind that it was the 5th time for her. the St. John's Institute of Dermatology reported allergic reactions for the paraphenylenediamine present in Bigen powder (and in other hair dye(I am never taking the responsability of using this product again. IF YOU DO SO PLEASE DO THE PATCH TEST EVEN IF YOU'VE BEEN USING IT FOR SEVERAL TIMES (sorry for my english by the way)

Product Rating: 4 Just don't leave it in too long!
Reviewer: Cynthia from New Orleans  Tue Sep 15 2009

This stuff is like henna dye. It is strong...I only left it in my hair for 3 mins. and washed it out and it worked great! it actually conditioned my hair. i needed grey coverage and I got that by leaving it in for that short length of time. If you leave it on your scalp or scratch your scalp with the brush you are using to put it on, you are opening the pores to the chemicals...if you apply it GENTLY and don't leave it in for more than 6 mins., you will be fine. Skin test is a good idea though...but don't leave it on your skin for more than 5 mins. This product is good for Asian hair.

I've been using Bigen for about a year now. I'd searched high and low for something that would color my hair black. I'd tried semi-permanent color as well as permanent color and none of them worked. BUT Bigen did.

Here are a couple of things to understand about this haircolor...

1. IT IS PERMANENT. It will not wash out after a few shampoos. It is there forever and ever and... you get it.

2. It, like all chemical products, can cause allergic reactions, even if you have used it before with no problems.

3. IF you choose this haircolor, you can forget about going lighter anytime soon. I tried to go for a soft brown- it didnt work. I even used a super light blonde kit with a booster and processed it twice. My roots (which had not been nigen-ed) turned blonde. The tips were still as black as ever.

If you are looking for a product that WILL permanently darken your hair, then Bigen is the product for you. If you just want to darken it temporaily, I suggest using temporary color.

Product Rating: 3 Buyers And First Time Tryers Beware!
Reviewer: Sarina Syville from New York  Mon Jul 06 2009

I'm a first time BIGEN user and I did the skin test for over 24 hours (with no adverse effects). My color of choice was #59 Oriental Black. I applied as quickly and left on for 15 minutes. I still had a mild allergic reaction to this product. I experienced itchy scalp and some bumps on my face and fingers. I realized you CAN NOT leave this product on your scalp for over 15 minutes. The total 15-20 minutes should start once you begin application so you have to move quickly! If you apply the dye to your entire head and then leave it in for 15 to 20 minutes you are overprocessing your hair and allowing all of these unknown chemicals to damage your scalp and get into your system. The results are good. The color is rich, vibrant, and dark. BEWARE. Know the risks so you can make an informed decision before using this product. I'm not sure if I'll give this product another try, but if the color last as long as people say it does, I'll have some time to make up my mind.

Reviewer: Arleen Womack from Virginia Beach, Virginia  Sat Jun 27 2009

I have been using Bigen for about 3 months now. I love the way it makes my hair look. It colors the roots so well. It looks closer to my true color. Henna is ok but it takes so long and it always leaves a reddish tone. After 3 months of using the Bigen, I did not treat my hair with conditioner before using and it broke off a lot of my hair. This scared me so I started researching the ingredients. I read that PPD which isp-Phenylendiamin sulfate will eventually dry the hair out. I don't know what else to use, even most of the Henna dyes have this ingredient in it. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Product Rating: 4 good but processes fast
Reviewer: R from NJ  Thu Jun 04 2009

This color is amazing! The only problem is that it was almost done processing before I finished applying. I barely had enough but covered my whole head successfully. The back looks a tad bit lighter but isn't that bad. I was worried when I got some on the counter But it came right off with a bleach wipe. I don't suggest leaving it on for 30 minutes unless you are gray because otherwise it will be really dark. I was done in 15 minutes with black brown applied to orange bleached hair.

Reviewer: Bossom from Caribbean  Wed May 27 2009

Today is the first time my hairdresser tries this product in my hair. My hair is black but the sun is turning my ends brown so i decided that i would like my hair to go jet black to get rid of the brown ends. And it works, its shiny and soft, I haven't suffer from any allergic reaction to it. But i will keep a eye on that. People do a test first before putting this product in your hair, make sure u do a test every time to make sure that nothing happen, because the first time it might not cause any damage but something can happen on the second try....Anyway its a good product

Product Rating: 5 Especially for grays
Reviewer: Anonymous from BALTIMORE  Thu Apr 02 2009

I've got those coarse grays right in the front of my head. I don't even have to try... I get a little on those grays and the color doesn't fade.
I have a friend who says that her hair was steadily thinning, she is always scratching dye out of her hair and that the color does not stay. We found out that she was applying the product improperly. Here are some tips if you need help.
- BIGEN is strong, but all permanent dyes are. You must apply it as directed.
- If you use product in your hair, you need to pre shampoo (please do not claw through your head) . Bigen takes no time to asorb into the hairshaft once the cuticle is open.
- Mix BIGEN until it is the consistency of wet toothpaste. Not too wet. And wait until it starts getting dark before applying.
- Rinse until the water streaming from your hair is clear. I suggest that you put your head under the tub faucet so that you can see the water streaming from your hair.
- Only apply to the roots or new growth. You shouldn't need to do the entire head each time you color.
Some of these tips seem pretty obvious... I hope it helps anyway.
BIGEN is Awesome!
