I am African-American and I used to use Bigen years ago to dye my hair oriental black for the fun of it. It worked very well but eventually I decided to let it grow out. Fast forward over 10 years later and I'm starting to go gray. I asked my sister who is a stylist what is a good brand for covering grays, as I often see so many people color their grays and the color doesn't take. She told me to start using Bigen again and boy was she right! It covered my gray hair like nobody's business. I used brown-black as my own hair is brown and I didn't want it Oriental Black. However it looked Oriental Black anyway, but the grays were totally covered! For African-Americans: when you first use this dye, it will leave your hair with a strange texture. But it will soften up and return to normal after a couple of washes. I recommend using very good moisturizing shampoos and conditioners if you are going to use Bigen. Perhaps it varies for each person but for me, the dark color softened after a few washes and now it's brown when the light hits it. My grays are still covered and the dark color is very natural-looking. So far I've found that the best shampoo and conditioner to use on black hair after putting in Bigen is Creme of Nature Ultra-Moisturizing Shampoo and their moisturizing conditioners. If you have African hair texture and want to cover your grays, Bigen works like a charm! I've been using this product on a few of my clients for the past year and everything seemed to be fine, since last week one of my client (also a friend) got the worst allergic reaction ever though we've been using it (oriental black #59) on her head (and weave) for the past 6 mounths! Her face got 3 times bigger and she looked like somebody burnt her face, ears, neck and scalp and she was basicaly leaking puse, she's still at the hospital today, getting better everyday thank God. I'm not trying to diss this product or anything but please i'm just sharing this so you can be aware, Yes it's a good hair dye, and it has done wonders on hair but Keep in mind that you could end up in a hospital bed in pain for several days just because you changed your hair color. Keep also in mind that it was the 5th time for her. the St. John's Institute of Dermatology reported allergic reactions for the paraphenylenediamine present in Bigen powder (and in other hair dye(I am never taking the responsability of using this product again. IF YOU DO SO PLEASE DO THE PATCH TEST EVEN IF YOU'VE BEEN USING IT FOR SEVERAL TIMES (sorry for my english by the way) This stuff is like henna dye. It is strong...I only left it in my hair for 3 mins. and washed it out and it worked great! it actually conditioned my hair. i needed grey coverage and I got that by leaving it in for that short length of time. If you leave it on your scalp or scratch your scalp with the brush you are using to put it on, you are opening the pores to the chemicals...if you apply it GENTLY and don't leave it in for more than 6 mins., you will be fine. Skin test is a good idea though...but don't leave it on your skin for more than 5 mins. This product is good for Asian hair. Do not buy this product. A day after i used this product i recieved horrible itching and swelling in my face and scalp. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days. My eyes could'nt open and my face was swollen for a week. My head is still itching after almost 2 weeks. Still having sharp pains in the arm amd legs. Still taking steroids. SAVE YOURSELF AND DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT! I've been using Bigen for about a year now. I'd searched high and low for something that would color my hair black. I'd tried semi-permanent color as well as permanent color and none of them worked. BUT Bigen did. Here are a couple of things to understand about this haircolor... 1. IT IS PERMANENT. It will not wash out after a few shampoos. It is there forever and ever and... you get it. 2. It, like all chemical products, can cause allergic reactions, even if you have used it before with no problems. 3. IF you choose this haircolor, you can forget about going lighter anytime soon. I tried to go for a soft brown- it didnt work. I even used a super light blonde kit with a booster and processed it twice. My roots (which had not been nigen-ed) turned blonde. The tips were still as black as ever. If you are looking for a product that WILL permanently darken your hair, then Bigen is the product for you. If you just want to darken it temporaily, I suggest using temporary color. Read all 89 customer reviews ...
