Instead of starting from the ends and rolling the curling iron barrel upwards towards the root like everyone does, start at the middle of a section of hair, then slide it towards the end and wind up like you normally would. By giving extra heat towards the middle, you get more volume.

My hairdresser said to keep the ends of the hair off of the iron and it seems like good advise. I don't have a terrible split end problem.
